Position: Senior Staff Nurse (Orthopaedic Trauma Unit)

Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse (Orthopaedic Trauma Unit)

We are looking for an outstanding registered nurse with a passion for trauma, spinal injury, head injury and poly‑trauma patients, who brings strong leadership and management skills to our team.

Overview

The Trauma Unit provides high‑quality care for orthopaedic trauma patients, with a focus on spinal and head injuries. The role involves patient assessment, treatment and coordination with multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities
  • Provide senior nursing care to trauma patients, including spinal and head injuries.
  • Coordinate treatment plans with ortho‑geriatricians, medical and surgical teams.
  • Participate in supervised ward teaching sessions and regular clinical teaching.
  • Ensure staff support by maintaining a band 6 presence on duty during the day and select night shifts.
  • Assist in the two‑week supernumerary induction program for new staff.
Training & Development
  • Weekly ward teaching sessions led by consultants.
  • Advanced trauma nurse team teaching on traction and spinal injuries.
  • Bi‑yearly trauma‑specific SDs and Trauma Immediate Life Support course.
  • Level 6 & 7 courses linked to local universities.
  • Trust leadership courses.
Team & Support

The team works closely with the fractured neck of femur unit and is supported by a band 7 Sister and an active practice education team.

Location

The unit is based in Reading, on the River Thames, with excellent transport links to London, Oxford and Southampton. Reading offers a vibrant community and plenty of leisure, shopping and cultural facilities.
