Role Description The Locum Veterinarian role at Vets for Pets in Reading is a temporary, on-site position providing clinical care for small animals in a busy practice setting. Day-to-day responsibilities include performing consultations, diagnosing and treating medical conditions, carrying out routine and emergency surgeries, and providing preventive care such as vaccinations and health checks. The role involves interpreting diagnostic tests, creating treatment plans, maintaining accurate medical records, and ensuring each patient receives compassionate, high-quality care.

The Locum Veterinarian will work closely with the nursing and support teams, communicate clearly with clients, and contribute to a safe, efficient clinical environment. Flexibility to cover shifts as required and adapt to practice workflows is essential.
Qualifications

• Recognized veterinary degree and eligibility to practice in the UK (MRCVS registration or ability to obtain it promptly).
• Proficiency in small animal general practice, including consultations, clinical examinations, diagnostics, and routine surgical procedures.
• Strong skills in case management, including treatment planning, follow-up care, and clear documentation of medical records.
• Effective communication and client-care skills, with the ability to explain diagnoses, treatment options, and preventive care in a clear and empathetic manner.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary practice team, showing reliability, professionalism, and respect for colleagues.
• Confidence in handling urgent and emergency cases, prioritizing patient welfare and safety in a fast-paced environment.
• Commitment to evidence-based medicine, ongoing professional development, and adherence to clinical, health and safety, and regulatory standards.
• Previous experience in UK small animal practice or locum work in similar settings is highly beneficial.
