Job Overview

Position:
Arborist – Working primarily in the field to maintain SSE’s electricity distribution network by performing tree cutting and related work. The role is permanent, full‑time and mobile across Reading, Slough, West London, or Basingstoke. Base home location must be within 30 minutes of one of our depots. You must hold a current driving licence.

Salary & Benefits

£29,504 – £34,757 per year, plus:

  • 37‑hour working week
  • London weighting allowance (if based in Slough or London)
  • Up to £4,442 in overtime payments and up to £3,820 in standby payments (potentially £8,262 extra per year, subject to qualifications)

Responsibilities
  • Work with a skilled team to evaluate, prepare and carry out tree cutting and vegetation management projects along SSE’s distribution network.
  • Trim trees and vegetation to keep them away from overhead lines and equipment, minimizing the risk of power cuts.
  • Carry out work safely, following SSE’s safety culture and guidelines.
  • Travel to a variety of sites, occasionally working away from home.
Qualifications
  • Previous experience in tree cutting, forestry or arboriculture (similar capacity experience accepted).
  • Relevant NPTC certificate units for chainsaw use, including NPTC UA.
  • Enthusiasm, flexibility, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Experience working with power lines and climbing is highly advantageous.
  • High regard for safety – commitment to SSE’s safety culture.
  • Current UK driving licence.
