The Registered Dental Assistant with Orthodontic Permit (RDA/OA) will function as a circulating assistant in chairside dental procedures under the direction of the Dental Site Manager. The RDA/OA will perform all dentistry procedures, clinic infection control procedures, cleaning and sterilization of instruments, tray setup and materials. This position will require travel between Rolling Hills Clinic sites to fill temporary staffing vacancies and/or shortages.
EssentialJob Functions
- Perform all phases of four-handed Dental Assisting duties for endodontics, oral surgery, pedodontics, prosthodontics, orthodontics and restorative procedures.
- Prepare teeth for bonding, and select, preposition, and cure orthodontic brackets after approval by the supervising licensed dentist.
- Remove only orthodontic brackets and attachments, removing the bonding material by the supervising licensed dentist.
- Size, fit, and cement orthodontic bands.
- Remove orthodontic bands and remove excess cement from supragingival surfaces of teeth with a hand instrument.
- Place and ligate arch wires.
- Remove excess cement with an ultrasonic scaler from supragingival surfaces of teeth undergoing orthodontic treatment.
- Fabricate soaped orthodontic study models.
- Fabricate Essix and Hawley retainers.
- Perform standard and radiographic methods, expose, process and mount diagnostic radiographs.
- Maintain familiarity with dental terminology, materials, medications and instruments used during dental procedures.
- Perform supportive tasks to ensure efficient patient flow: clean, sterilize instruments, and set up trays.
- Maintain and test equipment (sterilizer, x-ray dosimetry, x-ray processor, etc.) including daily lubrication.
- Effectively pour models and conduct other lab procedures.
- Instruct patients in oral hygiene and preventive dental education under the supervision of the dentist.
- Review and document inventory and reorder supplies as necessary to maintain par levels.
- Perform charting activities and document exam findings in patient record.
- Maintain a clean, orderly, and well-stocked operatory and laboratory.
- Plan work duties to ensure dental clinic efficiency.
- Have knowledge of patient scheduling procedures.
- Work with Staff Dentists/Dental team to develop and implement preventive dental activities for the community.
- Perform duties safely, following protective protocols to ensure personal safety and safety of others.
- Maintain compliance with ergonomic safety standards, mindful of posture and regularly practice ergonomic stretches.
- Ensure all duties, responsibilities and operations are performed with utmost regard for safety and health of all personnel involved, including themselves.
- Take appropriate corrective actions to address matters related to employee health and safety that have been brought to their attention.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
- Function chairside dental procedures as an RDA/OA.
- Perform mouth-mirror inspections of the oral cavity, charting obvious lesions, existing restorations, and missing teeth.
- Apply and activate bleaching agents using a non-laser light-curing device.
- Use automated caries detection devices and materials to gather information for diagnosis by the dentist.
- Obtain intraoral images for computer-aided design (CAD), milled restorations.
- Perform pulp vitality testing and record findings.
- Place bases, liners, and bonding agents.
- Chemically prepare teeth for bonding.
- Place, adjust and finish direct provisional restorations.
- Fabricate, adjust, cement, and remove indirect provisional restorations, including stainless steel crowns when used as a provisional restoration.
- Place post-extraction dressings after inspection of the surgical site by the supervising licensed dentist.
- Place periodontal dressings.
- Dry endodontically treated canals using absorbent paper points.
- Adjust dentures extra-orally.
- Remove excess cement from surfaces of teeth with a hand instrument.
- Polish coronal surfaces of the teeth.
- Place ligature ties and arch wires.
- Remove orthodontic bands.
