Red Deer County is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Parks Field Assistant to join our team. If you enjoy working outdoors, contributing to beautiful public spaces, and being part of a collaborative team that services the community, this role may be the perfect fit!
Under the day-to-day direction of the Parks Coordinator, the Parks Field Assistant plays an important role in maintaining and enhancing County-owned and managed outdoor areas. This position offers a variety, hands‑on work, and meaningful contributions to our municipality.
What You’ll Do- Support tree, shrub, and turf care.
- Perform manual and herbicide weed control.
- Conduct playground inspections and basic maintenance.
- Assist with roadside brushing, including coordinating with landowners and monitoring contractors.
- Operate a range of equipment (chainsaw, weed‑eater, UTV, tractors, trailers).
- Maintain vegetation around bridges and guardrails.
- Help with general parks tasks (painting, signage, graffiti removal, etc.)
- Complete documentation, records, reports, and other administrative duties.
- Communicate professionally with residents, contractors, and staff.
- Uphold safety standards and policies.
- Education or enrollment in Landscape Technology, Horticulture, Arboriculture, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience using hand/power tools and operating motorized equipment.
- Knowledge of pruning practices and chainsaw operation.
- Ability to identify local plant species and diagnose pests/diseases.
- Strong communication, organization, and independent work skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office and ArcGIS.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and acceptable driver’s abstract.
- Acceptable Criminal Record Check.
- Municipal parks experience and Pesticide Applicator (Landscape) certification are assets.
