Position Summary

The Applied Research Technician III will support Red Deer Polytechnic Applied Research projects related to community resource mapping and Red Flag awareness by performing data entry and analysis, contributing to research design, gathering and validating information, supporting approved evaluation activities, and preparing research summaries, reports, presentation materials, and other project documentation under supervision.

The position will support the CCSIF Community Mapping project and the PDCP See the Signs Red Flag Awareness project, with a focus on service navigation, referral pathways, dataset quality, evaluation support, and project deliverables

Position Responsibilities

Research support and coordination
  • Review existing CCSIF Community Mapping and Red Flags project materials.
  • Prepare a current-state summary of completed work, outstanding deliverables, risks, and dependencies.
  • Support approved project activities, including internal testing, stakeholder validation, evaluation activities, and documentation.
  • Coordinate scheduling, meeting notes, version control, and follow-up items for project meetings.
  • Follow approved research ethics, privacy, and data-management protocols.
  • Assist with recruitment, scheduling, and documentation for approved evaluation or validation activities, where ethics approval and supervisor direction are in place.
  • Maintain a project decision log, source log, and deliverables tracker
Data entry, validation, mapping support, and analysis
  • Clean, validate, and update priority records in the Central Alberta Community Asset Map.
  • Confirm source links, agency information, eligibility, service area, contact information, intake process, referral method, cost, accessibility, and date verified.
  • Flag outdated, ambiguous, duplicate, or high-risk records for supervisor review.
  • Apply standardized service categories and use-case tags.
  • Tag services relevant to Red Flags pathways, such as crisis response, domestic violence/ IPV , sexual violence, suicide/self-harm, mental health escalation, firearm access risk, victim services, housing, Indigenous supports, newcomer supports, rural access, and legal information.
  • Prepare map-ready exports for Google My Maps and/or GIS tools.
  • Summarize service gaps and validation findings in plain language.
  • Prepare charts, tables, and short data summaries for reports and presentations
Research synthesis and knowledge mobilization
  • Draft sections of reports, briefs, toolkits, facilitator guides, slide decks, and project updates.
  • Support and further develop Red Flags module and workshop alignment by checking consistency across learning objectives, slides, scenarios, knowledge checks, and referral pathways.
  • Support the development of Red Flags training materials in other languages, including connecting with RDP International Student Services for support
  • Develop plain-language summaries for supervisor/legal/content expert review.
  • Prepare a new or update the existing Red Flags and Community Mapping linkage matrix.
  • Draft a new or update the existing referral pathway guide that shows how the map supports early identification, support navigation, and coordinated response.
  • Support evaluation tools, including feedback forms, pre/post knowledge checks, and summary tables.
  • Prepare a final handoff package for the next project phase.
Service and administrative support
  • Prepare materials for meetings, workshops, internal testing, and presentations.
  • Maintain organized SharePoint folders and naming conventions.
  • Support data-security practices, file storage, and documentation.
  • Track deliverables against work plans and reporting deadlines.
  • Prepare short progress updates for the project supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of at least two years of post-secondary education in social work, sociology, psychology, public health, justice studies, community development, human services, education, data analytics, geography/ GIS , or a related field.
  • Six months to one year of related experience through applied research, practicum, community agency work, evaluation, data management, or project assistant work.
  • Strong Excel skills and comfort with structured datasets.
  • Ability to write clear summaries, tables, and presentation materials.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and equity-oriented work.
  • Ability to handle sensitive topics with discretion.
  • TCPS2, GBA+, and trauma-informed training completed or completed during onboarding.
  • Experience with Google My Maps, ArcGIS, QGIS , Power BI, Qualtrics, Microsoft Forms, or REDCap would be an asset.
