Position Objective

To provide skilled communication by receiving requests and transmitting information for emergency and non-emergency assistance within the County. This position is responsible for maintaining efficient communications between the public, law enforcement and other public safety agencies.


Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for this position, applicants must possess the following:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Experience in a high-volume customer service, fast-paced retail or restaurant setting, or other multitasking environment.
  • Must have proficient computer skills and experience.
  • Type a minimum of 40 words per minute.
  • Ability to work varied shifts.

Preferred Experience Beyond

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Public Safety Telecommunicator (911 Dispatcher), police, fire, or ambulance dispatching experience with a city, county or state agency
  • Public safety experience such as previous work as a Community Service Officer, police clerk, police officer, volunteer firefighter, or paramedic
  • Knowledge of or experience with the ARMER radio system
  • Familiarity with Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems and Records Management Systems (RMS).


Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge and ability to geographically orient using maps or GIS tools and interpret address/location data.
  • Knowledge of laws, ordinances and policies and terminology of local jurisdictions and location of boundaries, streets, addresses, etc., in service area.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical dispatch and/or identifying out-of-hospital cardiac arrests over the phone.
  • Ability to learn various software programs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly via radio, phone and computer tools, especially under pressure or during simultaneous incidents.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, other employees, and the public.
  • Ability to make decisions quickly with little margin of error.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.


Work Environment and Physical Demands

The primary responsibilities for this position will be performed approximately 100% of the time indoors. Will have infrequent exposure to health hazards and accidents; requires a low level of physical effort. Work is performed under the general supervision of the PST Sergeant.


Hours of Work

Shift work, including weekends, nights and holidays with rotating days off.


Compensation & Benefits

The Public Safety Telecommunicator position is compensated at salary grade 108 of the Goodhue County pay scale.

  • Range: $56,576 - $87,713 ($27.20/hour-$42.17/hour)
  • Starting pay is $56,576 - $59,404 ($27.20/hour-$28.56/hour) depending on qualifications

The County's comprehensive benefit package includes medical and dental insurance, health savings account, employer paid life insurance, short and long-term disability insurance, pre-tax flexible spending accounts, retirement plan, tax-deferred compensation, vacation and sick leave and 13 paid holidays per year.
