Balfour Beatty have been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage which is a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.

Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Section Engineer to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.

The Section Engineer will support and lead civil engineering and construction delivery across the project. The role is focused on traditional section engineering control, including planning, setting out, engineering coordination, safe systems of work, quality, programme, productivity, records, handover and commercial support. The scope may include enabling works, earthworks, drainage, underground services, ducting, roads, pavements, concrete works, structural steel, buildings, compounds, mobilisation works, temporary works, logistics areas, plant and vehicle routes, traffic management interfaces, structures, foundations, retaining works, kerbing, fencing, utilities interfaces and general site infrastructure.

The role is not limited to a single discipline. The requirement is for a capable Section Engineer who can understand drawings, specifications, RAMS, permits, construction sequencing, testing requirements, subcontractor outputs, temporary works interfaces and handover expectations. The role offers the opportunity to work across a major project with varied work fronts, practical engineering challenges and a broad range of construction activities.

This is a delivery-focused engineering role within a major civil engineering and construction environment. The Section Engineer will manage a defined section of works and support the wider delivery team with planning, engineering control, quality, programme, subcontractor coordination, records and handover.

What you'll be doing

• Promote and maintain high standards of health, safety and environmental performance within the allocated section
• Write and support the production and implementation of RAMS, task briefings and permits
• Ensure RAMS, permits, task briefings and safe systems of work are understood before works start
• Confirm that controls are in place for excavation, temporary works, lifting, plant movements, traffic management, service avoidance, access and environmental protection
• Monitor compliance with project health, safety and environmental requirements and intervene where standards are not met
• Support close call reporting, inspections, incident prevention and close-out of corrective actions
• Support Zero Harm and sustainability requirements objectives through proactive planning, supervision and engineering control

• Lead and support Site Engineers, Assistant Engineers and apprentice engineers within the allocated section
• Coordinate with supervisors, foremen, subcontractors and suppliers to support safe and efficient delivery
• Work with other Section Engineers and delivery leads to manage interfaces, access, programme dependencies and follow-on works
• Communicate clearly with construction, engineering, commercial, planning, quality, temporary works and HSE teams
• Support development of junior staff by providing guidance on setting out, records, quality,…
