JOB DESCRIPTION:
PARAPROFESSIONAL III (Severely Handicapped Special Education Environment) RANGE 6
- Under the direction of the Classroom Teacher, Principal or Designee, performs duties including classroom teacher assistance, assigned instructional supports, and individual student assignments.
- Assists instructional personnel in assigned instructional areas; tutors individual students and small groups; supports social development and behavior management with positive reinforcement strategies.
- Operates and assists students with instructional aids and computer-assisted instruction equipment and software; monitors remediation of specific learning problems.
- May administer medication in accordance with medical instructions; performs routine first aid and requests assistance for non-routine injury or illness.
- Observes and assists students with handicapping conditions, maintains an orderly and positive learning environment, and participates in progress reporting as assigned.
- Assists with materials preparation, record keeping, supply procurement, and use of media equipment; follows school rules and participates in staff meetings and in-services.
- Assists students with personal needs as necessary; provides a variety of skill-building activities for students with language and hearing disorders; shares observations with the teacher while maintaining confidentiality.
- REQUIRED
QUALIFICATION:
Must meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind. - Knowledge:
Correct English usage; child guidance for students with special needs; safe classroom and playground practices; basic instructional methods and classroom procedures; effective oral and written communication. - Ability:
Work with minimal supervision; perform routine clerical tasks; assist with instruction; follow directions; establish cooperative relationships; observe health and safety regulations.
- Experience:
Previous experience working with children in an organized setting, preferably as a Paraprofessional. - Education:
High school diploma or equivalent; training or coursework in child growth and development, special education, instructional technology, or a closely related field.
The position requires standing, walking, using hands, reaching, talking or hearing; frequent sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; ability to lift up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds with assistance; vision requirements including color discrimination and focus adjustment. Noise level is usually moderate. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
Work environment and scheduleShift schedule: M-F 8:00 a.m. – 1:45 p.m. (5.75 hrs/day); 182 workdays; 14 district-paid holidays. Includes vacation factor.
