POSITION SUMMARY

The Sheriff’s Office is organized into four major divisions:
Custody, Services, Enforcement, and Coroner. The Custody Division includes the County Jail and the Annex Work Facility. The Services Division includes the Local Office of Emergency Services, Personnel and Hiring, the Background Unit, Internal Affairs, and the Records Unit. The Enforcement Division handles patrol-related matters, major crimes, municipal law enforcement, and animal regulation. The Coroner’s Division investigates sudden, violent, unusual deaths.
THE POSITION
Under close supervision, assists sworn personnel by handling non-hazardous support responsibilities in the Sheriff’s Office, and performs related work as required.

Community Service Officer (CSO) is a generalist non-sworn classification that performs a wide variety of law‑enforcement support tasks that do not require peace‑officer powers or firearms. CSOs are assigned to the Enforcement Division or the Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services. Positions in this series are distinguished from sworn safety by lack of direct responsibility for physical restraint, protecting life, and apprehending offenders.
CSO I performs duties at an entry level and works more independently as experience is gained.
CSO II is the journey level class.
CSO III performs duties at an advanced level and may supervise Cadets.
Works day‑to‑day in an office setting at the assigned station; may require shift weekends, and holidays. Inspects and maintains departmental emergency vehicles, maintains office supplies, coordinates routine maintenance, documents counter reports, follows up on “after the fact” incidents, responds to non‑emergency calls, assists investigations, may be called out for critical incidents, conducts crime‑scene duties, performs rural and community crime‑prevention programs, analyzes criminal activity, assists investigators in documentation, serves civil process, arranges abandoned vehicle towing, assists in grant tracking, coordinates volunteer programs, trains staff, and performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONSCSO I: Knowledge of modern office procedures, Incident Command System (ICS), and critical incident response. Ability to deal with the public, perform clerical work, learn computer usage, work under pressure, exercise good judgment, handle confidential information, direct volunteers, oversee release inmates.
CSO II: Knowledge of crime‑scene protocol and related duties. Ability to teach and supervise staff, perform all CSO I duties, and complete required NIMS and first‑aid training.
CSO III: Knowledge of supervision, training, and organization. Ability to review and evaluate staff, train subordinates, provide lead supervision to Cadets.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Some experience in public safety or clerical work, at least 15 college units related to Criminal Justice, 2‑year customer‑service or clerical experience, excellent computer skills, excellent grammar, confidentiality, reliable driver’s record.
