Job Title
(Temporary/Substitute) Motor Pool Driver Technician at Inside Higher Ed
OverviewThe Shasta College Physical Plant department is seeking to build a pool of qualified applicants for substitute/temporary driver work. The role involves transporting students on field trips or to other sites within designated route(s) and ensuring the safety of student passengers while riding in a District bus or van. The driver is responsible for the safe operation of an assigned District bus or van while meeting established trip schedules and assisting the Motor Pool Mechanic/Foreperson or performing maintenance and repairs on District vehicles and equipment.
Frequent overtime and weekend hours with overnight stays required.
- Drive District vehicles in accordance with trip schedules; transport students and instructors on field trips including overnight stays; plan routes and stops as needed.
- Transport students and/or instructors with disabilities or service animals in compliance with laws and College policy.
- Maintain order and discipline of passengers; enforce bus riding rules; provide safety instructions.
- Conduct safety and operational inspections before trips; report needed repairs and perform basic on‑road repairs or emergency road calls.
- Inspect oil, coolant, belts, tires, batteries and other equipment; operate diagnostic equipment.
- Install chains when road conditions require.
- Complete mileage, safety and other reports; maintain daily driver’s log.
- Perform routine servicing such as oil changes, lubrication, battery maintenance, tire changes, and other mechanical tasks.
- Assist Motor Pool Mechanic/Foreperson with major tune‑ups, repairs, overhauls, and preventative maintenance.
- Maintain fleet records; estimate parts and costs; conduct state and federal inspections; use fleet management software.
- Assist with shop organization and safety.
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Valid, unrestricted Class A or B CDL with passenger endorsement and no air–brake restriction.
- Experience in auto and small engine repair; training in heavy‑duty vehicle repair.
- Enrollment in the District’s drug and alcohol testing program and DMV employee pull notice program.
- Valid medical certificate; school bus certificate and CPR card obtainable within 150 days of hire (funded by the District).
- Safe driving record; certification to operate all District equipment.
- Physical ability to perform duties, work at heights over ten feet, operate radios and heavy‑duty vehicles.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to diverse backgrounds and students with disabilities.
