JOB DESCRIPTION:
SCHOOL BUS DRIVER ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Drive a school bus or transportation vehicle over assigned routes in accordance with an established time schedule.
- Assist in evaluating transportation routes and report unsafe road conditions.
- Transport children to and from school in a safe manner.
- Load and unload students safely at designated stops and on study trips.
- Plan, organize, and implement students’ safety and vehicle evacuation drills.
- Maintain the bus or transportation vehicle in a clean and orderly condition (inside and outside) and inspect and report any mechanical defects or malfunctions.
- Adhere to policies and procedures to maintain appropriate student behavior.
- Respond to public contacts concerning transportation problems and concerns.
- Complete the daily transportation activity record, including number of students transported, mileage, type of trip, and standby time.
- Transport children with special learning needs and physical handicaps (with appropriate training).
- Administer first aid as required and contact appropriate administrators in case of serious injury or illness.
- Make daily inspections and fuel the bus as needed.
- Transport students and adults to and from field trips.
- Keep a record of routine maintenance and request repairs as needed; submit daily reports of bus condition and other required reports.
- Escort students across streets and stop traffic as necessary.
- Maintain an accurate student roster.
- Maintain all required licenses and certificates.
- Complete pupil surveys as directed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of:
- Safe driving practices and techniques.
- Basic first aid procedures and methods.
- Safety and maintenance requirements of bus and other pupil transportation equipment.
- Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Title 13 applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children.
- Ability to:
- Drive a school bus and other transportation equipment safely and efficiently.
- Maintain appropriate student behavior on a school bus or other transportation equipment.
- Perform appropriately in situations requiring tact and diplomacy.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Read and interpret maps, educational, and vehicle codes.
- Exert 20 to 40 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- Work involves operating a student transportation vehicle (often on rough surfaces), sitting during most of the assignment, but will involve walking or standing for brief periods.
- Perceive sound, near and far vision, depth perception, provide oral information, and use manual dexterity to operate related equipment.
- Move students in and out of buses and through emergency exits with sufficient mobility.
- May be exposed to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather, occasionally installing snow chains when required.
- Work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps; may walk or stand for extended periods.
- Any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge and skill is qualifying.
- Typical experience:
Prior work driving a school bus with no chargeable accidents in the last three (3) years or completion of a school bus driver training program. - Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
- Possession of a valid Class A or B California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
- Possession of a California School Bus Driver’s Certificate.
- Possession of a First Aid Certificate or passage of the California Highway Patrol First Aid Test.
- Possession of a CPR card.
- Possession of a Medical Certificate (Form DL 51 and DL 51A).
Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier.
