Are you passionate about helping learners build confidence in maths and develop the essential skills they need for everyday life, further learning and future employment? We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Functional Skills Maths Teacher to deliver engaging and accessible maths lessons within a prison education setting. In this rewarding role, you will support learners to improve their numeracy skills, overcome barriers to learning and progress towards positive outcomes.

We have a fantastic opportunity available to join Novus, our prison education provider at HMP Hewell, working as a Functional Skills Maths Teacher on a permanent, part-time basis (12 hours per week). Working pattern includes Thursday from 8am-5pm and Friday from 8am-12pm.

Site Information

Situated in the village of Tardebigge, near Redditch in Worcestershire, England, HMP Hewell is a Category B men’s prison serving the West Midlands area. It offers a range of training and development programs, including vocational workshops, educational courses, and initiatives focused on resettlement and family support.

Role Responsibilities

In this role, you will deliver engaging, accessible and high-quality Functional Skills Maths lessons which support learners to develop confidence with numeracy, problem-solving and practical maths skills for everyday life, further learning and future employment. You will play a key part in helping learners overcome barriers to maths, build independence and achieve recognised qualifications within a prison education setting.

You will:

  • Plan and deliver high-quality Functional Skills Maths teaching sessions which are accessible, engaging and tailored to learners’ numeracy needs and abilities.
  • Support learners to develop practical maths skills, including number, measure, shape, data handling and problem-solving, with a focus on real-life and workplace contexts.
  • Assess learner progress, provide constructive feedback and maintain accurate records in line with quality requirements.
  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that motivates learners and supports achievement.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to promote progression, employability and positive learner outcomes.
  • Use initial assessment and ongoing feedback to identify learners’ strengths, address barriers to learning and support individual progress.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need to:

  • Hold a teaching qualification and a relevant subject specialist qualification - or commit to obtain one outstanding qualification within 12 months.
  • Hold a recognised maths subject specialist qualification (Desirable).
  • Bring a strong understanding of Functional Skills Maths teaching approaches, with the ability to adapt learning to support learners at different levels of confidence, ability and prior educational experience.
  • Hold a minimum of Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy.
