Position: Clinical Lead Children & Young Peoples Neurodevelopmental Services

The Clinical Lead will provide senior clinical leadership across the Children & Young People (CYP) Autism (ASD) and ADHD pathways, ensuring safe, timely, NICE aligned assessment and formulation in accordance with:

Working as a highly experienced SAS grade paediatric ND clinician, the postholder will:

Lead day to day clinical operations

Support MDT clinical reasoning and quality

Deliver direct clinical assessments and feedback

Ensure that Consultant-level governance requirements are met

Strengthen clinical quality, safeguarding, and MDT cohesion

The role does not replace Consultant responsibilities. Consultant Paediatrics / Consultant CYP Psychiatry retain ultimate diagnostic governance, statutory signoff, and oversight of complex or high risk cases.

Main duties of the job

Provide senior clinical leadership for CYP ASD and ADHD pathways, ensuring alignment with SOPs and NICE guidance. Lead weekly MDTs with Consultant involvement and support triage of complex cases, comorbidity questions and safeguarding concerns. Contribute to audits, case reviews and quality improvement.

Deliver ASD and ADHD assessments including developmental histories, parent interviews, school liaison, observational input and clear diagnostic reports. Complete multi-setting ADHD assessments, functional impact evaluation, differential formulation and feedback, preparing handovers for Consultant signoff.

Provide day-to-day supervision to Band 7 clinicians and assistants, supporting consistent documentation and communication. Promote reflective practice, peer learning and maintain competency frameworks.

Maintain Level 3 Safeguarding, elevate concerns appropriately and contribute to risk assessments. Support service KPIs, governance activity and SOP development. Act as a clinical contact for families, schools, SEND teams, CAMHS and Community Paediatrics, ensuring clear and compassionate communication throughout the diagnostic pathway.

Children and Young People (CYP) ASD a diagnostic assessment pathway delivered through a multidisciplinary model, aligned to national guidance and local commissioning arrangements.

Job responsibilities

Reports to: Head of Services & Consultant Paediatrician/Consultant CYP Psychiatrist

Hours: Up to 3 days per week (sessions negotiable)

Contract: Substantive or Fixed Term

Salary: SAS aligned clinical rate (DoE)

Person Specification
  • Essential Qualifications
  • GMC registration with licence to practise
  • Senior SAS grade experience (Associate Specialist / Specialty Doctor) in Paediatrics or Community Child Health
  • Experience in CYP ADHD and/or ASD assessment
  • Enhanced DBS (Childrens Barred List)
  • Significant experience in neurodevelopmental assessment within paediatrics / community child health settings
  • Demonstrable skill in conducting developmental histories, multi setting information gathering, and functional impairment assessments
  • Proven MDT working, including liaison with CAMHS, schools, SaLT, psychology, social care
  • High quality clinical reporting and feedback experience
  • Experience contributing to governance, auditor service development
  • Familiarity with ASD tools (e.g., ADOS2, ADIR, 3

    Di) as observer/paired clinician
  • Experience with in CYP ADHD multidisciplinary pathways
  • Experience supporting junior clinicians and supervising clinical work
  • Experience contributing to or working toward CESR (Paediatrics)
