Our Medical Short Stay Unit is an integral part of our Urgent Care Division. This is an amazing opportunity for a role that provides professional management, leadership and service development for the right individual.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Nurse Leader with a passion for Acute Care. This is an exciting time to join our rapidly transforming Acute Medical Directorate, working with excellent colleagues in Acute Medicine and other specialties; this is a great opportunity to work in a progressive and dynamic department.
The post holder should be an experienced Senior Nurse with significant experience within an acute sector to join our Acute Medical Directorate as a Clinical Nurse Manager. We are looking for a candidate with strong clinical background who can demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment for leading on the delivery of high quality patient care, as well as possessing the skills to motivate and develop your nursing team.
As a Ward Manager, you will support the Matron in leading the strategic and operational Nursing Practice within the Urgent Care Division.
Main duties of the jobTo ensure a high standard of nursing care at all times through the effective management of staff and resources within the acute medical directorate.
To demonstrate strong clinical leadership in stressful and challenging situations, to promote a positive approach to new challenges and creative ways of working, and to act as an advocate for the designated area and liaise with all members of the multi‑disciplinary team to coordinate all aspects of patient care in the best interests of the patient.
Job responsibilitiesKEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Professional/Clinical Leadership
- Accept personal responsibility and accountability for your infection prevention and control practice; ensure familiarity with, and compliance with, all relevant policies and mandatory updates.
- Develop practice in the assessment of health and wellbeing needs and in addressing individuals’ health and wellbeing needs.
- Promote people’s equality, diversity and rights.
- Assess, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care, coordinating the holistic needs of patients.
- Be responsible for the organisation of nursing care for the patients assigned to the team.
- Take measures to ensure patient safety, delegating care to nurses with appropriate skill levels and reporting any untoward incidents or accidents to the Matron.
- Establish and maintain communication with individuals and groups about difficult or complex matters and overcome communication problems.
- Lead work teams in the development of knowledge, ideas, and practice.
- Clinical Governance
- Promote best practice in health, safety and security.
- Contribute to quality improvement.
- Facilitate research–based practice within the ward and ensure appropriate implementation.
- Ensure nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with Trust policies.
- Ensure good standards of practice through effective quality assurance measures such as clinical audit programmes.
- Ensure all staff are conversant and comply with Trust policies and regulations, attending compulsory lectures as instructed.
- Monitor the safe and effective use of all equipment, the economic use of supplies, ordering replacement equipment and maintenance.

- Ensure a duty rota provides effective, well‑balanced cover for the 24‑hour service and that a suitably qualified nurse is always present, considering budgetary constraints.
- Liaise with other Ward/Department Managers and directorates to place workload and skill mix effectively; inform the Matron of nurse‑management issues.
