Staff Nurse, Garden Suite Oncology/Haematology

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic nurse to join our chemotherapy unit at The Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, part of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. The unit is a 12‑chair day unit caring for patients with a range of cancers who are receiving systemic anti‑cancer therapies.

This is a 22.5 hour a week, 12 month fixed‑term contract. Unit opening hours are Monday to Friday 8:00‑20:00 and Saturdays 8:30‑16:30.

Main duties of the job
  • Thorough assessment and management of patients undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatment.
  • Administration of cytotoxic treatment and other intravenous therapies according to protocols, trust and national guidelines.
  • Pre‑chemotherapy consultations providing information and ensuring informed consent.
  • Identifying adverse events and liaising with senior nurses and medical professionals for management of care.
  • Recognising and providing psychological and emotional support for patients and knowing when and where to signpost.
Job responsibilities
  • Assess patients for chemotherapy to ensure physical condition and blood parameters are satisfactory, escalating concerns to the coordinator.
  • Administer and dispose of intravenous and chemotherapy safely, following Trust and National Guidelines.
  • Provide information regarding treatment and side effects, ensuring informed consent.
  • Provide one‑to‑one and telephone advice to patients and families about side effects and their management.
  • Use effective communication skills to enhance patient understanding, adapting information to individual needs.
  • Liaise with healthcare professionals in hospital and community settings to ensure seamless transfer of care.
  • Provide psychological and emotional support, referring to other professionals when appropriate.
  • Assess patients with difficult venous access and recommend alternative access with senior nurse support.
  • Ensure safe administration of chemotherapy regimens according to trust protocols.
  • Provide follow‑up care and maintenance of central venous lines, advising other professionals as appropriate.
  • Administer other intravenous therapies (e.g., blood, bisphosphonates) following protocols.
  • Monitor and initiate care to address or prevent reactions and complications of treatment.
  • Be knowledgeable about specific care requirements of patients in the unit.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and act on instructions.
Person Specification
  • Excellent verbal and non‑verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues across health and social care settings.
  • Aware of own strengths and weaknesses.
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse on Part 1 of the professional register.
  • Teaching and assessing qualification.
  • First level degree or equivalent, or working towards one.
Experience
  • Post‑registration experience at Band 5.
Salary and benefits

£32,073 to £39,043 a year (Band 5 Agenda for change pay scale).
