The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) is an itinerant position in Lake Washington School District. The TVI responds to referrals, attends meetings (guidance team, evaluation, IEP, 504), conducts functional vision evaluations/learning media assessments and completes related paperwork (eligibility reports/individual education plans). The TVI provides specially designed instruction, related services, and consultation to students, school staff, and parents. They plan for and teach students with vision impairments ages 3 through 22 in the school and community, including instructing students to read and write braille when appropriate.
This position may also be referred to as a Teacher of Blind or Low Vision Students (TBLVS).
- Washington State Teaching Certificate
- Washington State Endorsement in Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)
- Orientation & Mobility certification preferred
- Create a schedule to meet the IEP time listed on your caseload.
- Participate in all meetings related to students.
- Conduct screenings and assessments upon referral.
- Consult with staff, parents, and students.
- Provide materials, equipment, etc. required for student access.
- Provide instruction in the development and maintenance of skills to meet the student’s unique educational needs in the following areas, as indicated in the IEP:
- Sensory‑motor skills including pre‑braille, tactile graphics, braille, Nemeth Code, abacus
- Technology and related skills and instruction in various software and accessibility
- Low vision and visual efficiency skills
- Concept development and academic skills
- Skills in the Expanded Core Curriculum
- Maintains continuous records of individual student academic progress
- Communicates learner objectives and progress to parents, teachers, and administrators
- Participates in special education staff meetings, projects and other activities as designated by the Director of Special Education.
- Conducts above activities in accordance with all legal timelines and requirements.
- Maintenance of relevant state and federal reports;

Salary:
Paid per teacher salary schedule with Base contract plus additional contracts for LEAP days, and Responsibility. Additional Technology stipend and Professional Fund. See LWEA salary schedule posted on website. Full benefit package available for employees working a minimum of 630 hours during the school year.
