Summary
Reality Labs Research (RL‑R) brings together a world‑class R&D team of researchers, developers, and engineers with the shared goal of developing AR and VR across the spectrum. The Surreal research group at RL‑R is solving the next generation of research challenges on the path to building future machine perception enabled technologies. We are building this research device to understand the world from a human's perspective and lay the foundation for Contextual AI experiences on future AR glasses.
The technology that is being developed within the Surreal team at RL is a new generation of end‑to‑end real‑time 3D scene understanding systems working across novel mobile sensor design, sensor fusion, state estimation, computer vision, large‑scale reconstruction and localization, as well as large‑scale online inference and optimization. The Surreal team is seeking an experienced engineering manager to lead and support a group of world‑class researchers and engineers in order to support this initiative.
Responsibilities
Research Engineering Manager Responsibilities:
Lead and support a team of engineers and research scientists to build the full technology stack across AI glasses and the cloud, integrating systems that span multi‑modal LLMs and real‑time computer visionPartner with Research Program Management in developing a research/incubation/productization roadmap and strategyBe both a technical leader and people managerCommunicate cross‑functionally and drive engineering effortsPartner closely with many Meta internal partner teams to create shared roadmaps and deliver on the product visionChampion engineering and operational effectiveness, establishing metrics and processes for regular assessment and improvement for production ML/CV/Contextual AI pipelinesEstablish project frameworks and development processesCommunicate with the leadershipMinimum Qualifications
6+ years of people management experience, including demonstrated success in creating and growing research engineering organizations (e.g., teams of 20+ scientists and engineers) and delivering production systems12+ years of industry experience, including 5+ years as an individual contributor and 6 years managing, spanning software engineering, research, and technical managementDemonstrated expertise and technical leadership in Multi‑modal Large Language Models (LLMs), Computer Vision (including 3D Machine Perception), Robotics, and multi‑sensor data fusion/optimizationDemonstrated experience in recruiting and managing technical teams, including performance managementLeadership and interpersonal communication experience in working across many disciplines, drive best practices, and mentor team membersMS degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalentPreferred Qualifications
Experience leading a team to ship version one products, including developing and implementing machine learning and computer vision aspects of projects utilizing deep learning models on multi‑sensor edge devicesExperience managing teams that successfully productize Computer Vision (CV), 3D Machine perception (e.g., using images and point clouds for classification and dimensioning), and AI/ML technologies from conception to end, including establishing scientific vision for new programs based on multi‑modal LLMsExperience managing joint hardware‑software development, specifically designing and driving to production multi‑sensor ensemble machine learning and computer vision systems for real‑time decision makingPhD degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalentPublic Compensation
$213,000/year to $293,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits
