Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational database systems, enabling a multitude of applications across industries. This Senior Security Operations Engineer role is part of the Azure Database organization’s Security Operations team, dedicated to strengthening internal security across services such as Azure SQL, Postgre

SQL, and Cosmos DB. The team focuses on infrastructure security, security hardening, access control, anomaly detection, and centralized security tooling.

• Design and implement scalable access‑management solutions, including RBAC and policy enforcement, across Azure database services.
• Develop and maintain security tooling to support vulnerability management, threat detection, and compliance monitoring.
• Lead security hardening efforts for infrastructure and services, ensuring alignment with Microsoft and industry best practices.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate security into development workflows and drive adoption of secure coding practices.
• Conduct threat modeling and risk assessments, providing actionable insights to improve the security posture of Azure database platforms.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field OR 5+ years of experience in software development lifecycle, large‑scale computing, access control, modeling, cyber security, anomaly detection, SOC detection, threat analytics, SIEM, IT, and operations incident response.
• 5+ years of experience in distributed systems.
• 3+ years of experience with software tools such as security tools, access control, vulnerability management, or anomaly detection.
• Hands‑on experience coding in C, C#, C++, Java, or Python.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements. This includes, but is not limited to, the Microsoft Cloud Background Check. The position requires passing the check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

• Master’s Degree or Doctorate in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field OR 7+ years of experience in software development lifecycle, large‑scale computing, modeling, cyber security, and anomaly detection.
• Certifications such as CISSP, CISA, CISM, SANS GCIA, GCIH, OSCP, Security+.

Security Operations Engineering IC4 – typical base pay range (U.S.) USD 119,800 – 234,700 per year. Specific locations (San Francisco Bay area and New York City) have a range of USD 158,400 – 258,000 per year. Benefits and other compensation vary by location.
