Behind the Badge Foundation provides comprehensive support to Washington State’s law enforcement agencies, families, and communities following the death or serious injury of an officer in the line of duty. Drawing from lived experience, we offer compassionate, trauma-informed care to ensure those affected are treated with dignity, respect, and the highest level of service. We also provide ongoing resources and networking opportunities for current and retired officers and their families.

The Program Specialist plays a vital role in advancing the Foundation’s mission by assisting in the development, delivery, and growth of programs that support law enforcement officers, their families, survivors, and agencies. This position requires strong organizational skills, flexibility, a desire to serve, and the ability to build and maintain professional relationships across diverse communities.

  • The ability to adapt and grow with technology, communications, and marketing—including social media, live streaming/webcasts, podcasts, website management, printed materials, and professional networking.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Represent the Foundation professionally and compassionately when engaging with survivors, law enforcement officers, families, agencies, and community partners statewide.
  • Develop and maintain up-to-date resource libraries for survivors, officers, and families, including benefits and services available after a line‑of‑duty death or catastrophic injury.
  • Identify, vet, and maintain relationships with culturally competent therapists, providers, and service partners.
  • Provide outreach and support to those impacted by trauma or the law enforcement profession.
  • Assist with planning and executing programs and gatherings such as survivor connections and peer support opportunities.
  • Assist with planning and executing programs and gatherings such as law enforcement family network.
  • Assist with planning and executing programs and gatherings such as officer and family wellness initiatives.
  • Curate, create, and distribute educational and informative content across multiple platforms, including social media, podcasts, live streams, printed publications, and the Foundation’s website.
  • Maintain detailed calendars and timelines to support program delivery, outreach, and events.
  • Develop and deliver presentations on relevant topics for internal and external audiences.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and community partners to meet program goals and further the Foundation’s mission.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Combination of education, training, and relevant experience (life or work experience will be considered)
    OR bachelor’s degree in human services, Criminal Justice/Criminology, Social Services, or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to develop, maintain, and strengthen professional relationships.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies, including marketing and communication tools (iOS proficiency is a bonus).
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with attention to detail.
  • Self‑motivated, adaptable, and able to problem‑solve independently.
  • High integrity, discretion, and commitment to confidentiality.
DESIRED SKILLS
  • Experience in trauma services, law enforcement, emergency services, or related fields.
  • Volunteer coordination and engagement.
  • Familiarity with law enforcement culture.
  • Skills in communications, marketing, and technology use for outreach and engagement.
  • Knowledge of grief and trauma issues, preferably in the law enforcement context, and an understanding of trauma‑informed care.
OTHER
  • This is an in‑office position based in Washington State, typically Monday–Friday, 8 hours per day / 40 hours per week, with some flexibility upon mutual agreement.
  • Requires flexibility to adjust schedule based on events and organizational needs, including occasional evening and weekend work.
  • Must adhere to the Foundation’s standards of confidentiality, ethics, and professionalism.
  • This is an at‑will position and may be ended by either party at any time for any reason.
  • Performance will be reviewed within one year to assess skills, growth, and organizational needs.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and current auto insurance.
  • Successful completion of a Washington State Patrol background check and Department of Motor Vehicles driving record check.
  • Employment offer is contingent upon verification of current employment, confirmation of work history, and satisfactory completion of background screening.
Salary Range

$30–$34 per hour
