Candidate ProfileIdeal candidates will place the student at the center of everything, mentor, and work collegially. The department is culturally responsive to a racially and socioeconomically diverse student body (68% Latinx, 11% Asian/Pacific Islander, 4% Black, 14% White, 1% American Indian, 2% multiracial). The candidate will join a department dedicated to a responsive curriculum.
Instructional Responsibilities- Teach full range of Communication courses (public speaking, interpersonal communication, argumentation, persuasion, group communication, and other department offerings).
- Use technology solutions in the classroom.
- Communicate effectively with students and staff.
- Participate in professional meetings, workshops, and extracurricular department activities.
- Serve on and attend departmental, college, and district committees as needed.
- Participate in program review, student learning outcome development, and assessment to improve student learning.
- Teach in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening, weekend, online, off‑campus, large group instruction, and may include off‑campus instruction at local high schools for dual enrollment.
- Fulfill all duties of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in speech, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication studies, or related field (or Bachelor’s plus Master’s in drama/theater arts, mass communication, or English).
- Valid California Community College Credential (or equivalency).
- Evidence of responsiveness and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and ability to implement equity‑minded practice in the classroom.
- Experience integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.
- Recent experience working with racially minoritized students and understanding of historical exclusion patterns.
- Willingness to examine and remediate instructional practices for racially minoritized students.
- Professional experience with diverse student populations, disabilities, and technology use.
- Strong communication skills and committee participation.
- Knowledge of current assessment methods and materials.
- Collegiality and positive workplace climate.
- Knowledge of the community college mission and goals.
178 duty days per year.
Salary and BenefitsStarting annual salary: $71,054 – $106,970 (based on education and experience). Doctoral stipend: $2,419. Fringe benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and CalSTRS retirement.
Selection ProcedureHuman Resources screens for completeness and minimum qualifications. A selection advisory committee reviews qualified candidates and determines interview invitations. Interviews are tentatively scheduled and short‑listing leads to final interviews, teaching demonstrations, and writing prompts. Final recommendations go to the Vice President and College President for approval and final approval by the Board of Trustees.
