The Custody Services Division - Workforce Planning and Development Branch seeks dynamic, self-motivated, highly organized and committed professionals to assume the role of Training Specialist.

Training Specialists are responsible and accountable leaders who embrace diversity and equality, and treat everyone with dignity and respect. Dedicated to service excellence, we demonstrate innovation, collaboration and transparency, practice effective and accountable use of resources and promote engagement and leadership at all levels.

In this exciting role, you will contribute to the development of training materials (including web-based e-learning modules), facilitate learning and development initiatives for new and existing employees and support the division’s ongoing recruitment, training and retention strategies.

Our ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of:

  • Custody and community operations (youth and adult), departments and programs;
  • Relevant legislation, policy and standards;
  • Correctional programs, services and practices;
  • Human resource principles – competency-based staffing model;
  • Adult learning principles, theories, methodologies, strategies and approaches;
  • Group dynamics and group facilitation/presentation/practices/techniques;
  • Curriculum development and implementation processes; and
  • Multi-cultural beliefs, values and perspectives, with a particular emphasis on First Nations and Metis issues.
  • You will be an exceptional communicator and possess the following skills and attributes:

  • Interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills to research, plan, develop, facilitate, train and evaluate learning materials and training sessions;
  • Proficiency in operating various software, hardware and computer systems and programs to assist in the development of presentations and learning materials;
  • Physical ability to safely and effectively deliver physical skills training through practical demonstration and modelling of techniques in a manner that is consistent with the force options program and standards;
  • An enhanced level of fitness to meet the requirements of a physically demanding training environment;
  • A positive, reliable, client-focused, proactive role model in order to promote positive growth in a challenging environment;
  • Self-confident and collaborative in order to meet goals, provide direction and empower yourself and others;
  • Trustworthy in order to earn respect and establish credibility for building mutual trust; and
  • Supportive/empathetic and non-judgmental in order to maintain effective relationships and encourage personal growth in others.
  • Typically, the competencies for this position are acquired through the successful completion of a human services or education degree coupled with experience designing and delivering training materials or programs to adult learners.

    Experience facilitating correctional concepts/theories and physical skills training within a custody or community environment would be seen as an asset.
