Tech Blocks is a cloud-first, engineering-led technology services firm that designs, builds, and manages AI-native platforms and digital products for some of the most forward-thinking utilities, retailers, and healthcare organizations in North America. We’re working with leading utilities on transforming their AMI 2.0 rollouts into data- and insight-driven journeys.

We are looking for an Itron IEE MDMS & AMI 2.0 Subject Matter Expert who can guide both the technical architecture and the strategic roadmap for utilities navigating smart meter data, grid modernization, and cloud-native analytics.

Role Overview:

As a SME in Itron IEE MDMS and AMI 2.0, you will:

  • Lead the end-to-end delivery of Itron MDMS configuration, integration, and optimization.
  • Advise utilities on use case prioritization, maturity roadmaps, and implementation sequencing based on technical readiness and business value.
  • Serve as the trusted expert across smart metering data flows, validation, estimation, editing (VEE), and integration into enterprise systems like SAP IS-U via the ISAIM adapter.
  • Enable enterprise data and analytics teams to leverage AMI 2.0 data effectively while managing cloud costs and performance.
  • You will also collaborate with Tech Blocks' architects, cloud engineers, and AI teams to help clients unlock new use cases such as edge computing, load disaggregation, predictive maintenance, and DER forecasting.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Implementation

  • Serve as the primary authority on Itron IEE MDMS architecture, configuration, deployment, and integration.
  • Manage the integration of MDMS with SAP IS-U via ISAIM adapter and other enterprise systems.
  • Design scalable and normalized AMI data models that span AMI 1.0 and 2.0 environments.
  • Develop data ingestion and transformation logic for smart meter interval and event data.
  • Ensure alignment with industry standards around VEE, meter events, asset hierarchy, and service point management
  • Optimize VEE rule configurations, interval data ingestion, event processing, and exception handling.
  • Troubleshoot data quality issues including bad reads, billing mismatches, false alerts, and latency.
  • Collaborate on cloud data pipeline architecture for ingesting and storing meter data securely and cost-efficiently.

Strategic Advisory

  • Work with stakeholders to map and prioritize AMI 2.0 use cases based on technical feasibility, infrastructure readiness, and business impact.
  • Design and deliver a Use Case Maturity Model aligned to client systems, processes, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Facilitate cross-functional planning sessions across IT, customer experience, operations, and analytics.
  • Advise on edge use case enablement (e.g. DI nodes, voltage events, meter health monitoring).
  • Help define governance models and data accessibility policies across the enterprise.
  • Create detailed documentation including architectural diagrams, data flows, and implementation roadmaps.

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in smart metering and utility enterprise platforms.
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience with Itron IEE MDMS including configuration, integration, and analytics.
  • Strong knowledge of AMI 1.0 vs 2.0 architecture differences and evolution.
  • Proven track record in AMI data modeling, including interval data, events, asset relationships, and lifecycle workflows.
  • Strong experience with SAP IS-U, especially through the ISAIM adapter or equivalent integration framework.
  • Deep knowledge of AMI 2.0 architecture, smart meters, and grid modernization use cases.
  • Demonstrated experience mapping AMI 2.0 use cases to maturity levels and implementation stages.
  • Strong background in interval billing, VEE rules, TOU/CPP models, and exception handling logic.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native architectures and managing AMI data pipelines in Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • Experience working with customer engagement platforms, outage management systems (OMS), and DMS.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Distributed Intelligence (DI) edge use cases and Itron head-end systems.
  • Prior consulting or utility-side experience in AMI transitions from 1.0 to 2.0.
