Coordinate and process customs clearances for international shipments while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and tariff requirements. Advise clients and coordinate with carriers and authorities to facilitate timely release and delivery of goods.
Main Duties- Prepare and submit customs documentation, commercial invoices, and declarations for imports and exports.
- Classify goods according to tariff schedules and calculate duties, taxes, and other fees.
- Communicate with customs authorities, carriers, freight forwarders, and clients to resolve issues and expedite clearances.
- Review bills of lading, manifests, permits, and supporting documents for accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- Monitor shipment status, track releases, and coordinate delivery, holds, or re-exports as required.
- Maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and assist with audits and compliance reviews.
- Postsecondary diploma or certificate in customs brokerage, international trade, business, logistics, or a related field.
- At least one year of experience in customs brokerage, import-export operations, freight forwarding, or a related role.
- Working knowledge of Canadian customs regulations, tariff classification, valuation methods, and duty calculation.
- Experience using electronic customs filing systems, EDI or commercial customs software, and proficiency with common office applications.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational abilities, and effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Eligible to obtain a customs broker licence or meet applicable regulatory/security clearance requirements where required.
- Tariff classification and interpretation of customs regulations.
- Preparation and management of customs and shipping documentation.
- Client liaison and effective communication with regulatory authorities and carriers.
- Analytical problem-solving to resolve clearance issues and mitigate penalties.
- Proficiency with electronic filing systems, EDI processes, and spreadsheet software.
- Time management and ability to prioritize multiple shipments and deadlines.
