Job Description:
OVERVIEWWe are seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented Building Official to oversee the Building & Code Enforcement Department in Dewey Beach. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction, plans review and FEMA. This role is vital in maintaining the integrity of building projects, promoting safety, and ensuring adherence to regulations.
DUTIESDocumentation Management:
- Review building plans and permit applications
- Ensure that all construction contractors/workers are properly licensed
- Work to correct the town’s 911 addressing system to be compliant with town and county requirements
- Maintain an electronic/ online log of permits applications
Regulatory Control:
- Maintain an electronic database of town properties and permit application / permits
- Maintain any new technical building code developments/information from the State of Delaware
- As approved by Town Commissioners, update any Construction codes/practices
- Instruct property owners, realtors, contractors, designers with Community Rating System and Flood Plain Management information
- Report major/serious or problematic infractions to the Town Manager and/or Assistant Town Manager.
Inspection Management:
- Review and inspect applications for building permits to ensure compliance with Town codes
- Upon completion (as verified by Sussex County Building/Permit Office) review new construction projects for adherence to Town Code and before issuance of certificate of occupancy
- Conduct inspections of commercial/residential properties

Skills & Abilities:Excellent Oral and Written Communication. Thorough knowledge of construction principles, techniques, and practices. Ability to perform inspections of permitted activities to assure conformance with appropriate codes; ability to check and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints, ability to maintain current knowledge of technical developments in the construction field. Ability to maintain effective courteous relations. Proficient in electronic data entry and Microsoft Office Suite.
Education & Experience
:
Bachelors degree or 3 years of experience in construction work in a trade
Required Certificates / Registrations
:
Driver’s license, ICC Certification within 2 years of date of hire, Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector (64), Permit Technician (14)
Language
Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees, residents or visitors of the Town.
Mathematical
Skills:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability:Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram, or schedule form.

Base salary of $61,000 annually, with the potential for a higher salary commensurate with experience.
