Naval Architect

Role

Provide Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering expertise in support of JFD’s design activities from concept design through to engineering release for manufacture, and support mobilising equipment for planned exercises and emergency call outs worldwide.

Location:

Westway, Glasgow.

• Assess technical queries and provide engineering design input to new products and support existing product range.
• Liaise with internal departments (sales, procurement, production) to ensure optimal technical solutions.
• Source suitable components and materials, create part numbers and bills of materials.
• Create engineering documentation such as specifications, proposals, assembly instructions, test procedures, certifications and reports.
• Check detailed manufacturing drawings and documentation for adherence to company standards and compliance with internal and external regulations.
• Ensure engineering solutions are delivered on time and on budget.
• Conduct site visits to other JFD offices and client assets as required.
• Act as technical checker of drawings and documentation generated for the Mechanical Engineer role.

You will be a natural problem‑solver with excellent written and verbal communication, efficient organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to adapt to changing scope or client demands. You will take ownership and accountability of tasks, drive to completion and will coach, mentor and develop talent.

• Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent industry experience.
• Post‑graduate or professional qualification (e.g., Chartered Engineer) desirable.
• Perform structural design and analysis.
• Expertise in trim and stability analyses.
• Experience in hull‑form analysis with knowledge of stability, hydrodynamic performance and sea‑keeping predictions.
• Expertise in deck layouts / load‑out plans.
• Experience with product lifecycle management systems for generating and storing engineering packages.
• Design integration, coordinating inputs from other engineering disciplines.
• Develop concepts and perform feasibility design studies.
• Review and approve naval architecture deliverables prior to client release or manufacture.
• Perform ship general arrangements and configuration drawings.
• Previous experience working on submersibles advantageous.
• Support preparation of class submittals.
• Experience with mobilising / de‑mobilising equipment advantageous.
• Familiar with international quality and safety standards (ISO 9001, ISO 45001, etc.).
• Apply regulatory body rules (Class Standards, LR, DNV, National Standards, IMCA) and ship specifications to develop conforming designs.
• Flexible approach to travel locally and overseas as projects require.

Secure, full UK driving licence required. Ability to pass security clearance required.
