Construction Materials Field Technician

Reno, NV | Full-Time, Hourly (Non-Exempt) | $25+/hour DOE

Overview

Westex Consulting Engineers, a long-standing consulting engineering firm in Reno, is adding Field Technicians to its Construction Materials Testing team. Technicians here are the people on site making sure soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates meet project requirements before they become part of a building, road, or foundation.

You don't need to be certified to apply. What matters most is a background in construction or field work, a careful approach, and an interest in building a long-term career in testing and inspection. Westex provides the training and support to help you earn your NAQTC and ACI certifications.

Day to Day
  • Sample and test soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates in the field and in the lab, working alongside experienced technicians.
  • Perform concrete testing, including slump, air content, temperature, and cylinder casting, along with soil compaction and moisture testing.
  • Label, handle, and deliver material samples to the lab following proper procedures.
  • Document results and site conditions in accurate, well-organized daily reports.
  • Visit commercial and civil construction projects throughout the Reno area.
  • Keep contractors, engineers, project managers, and clients informed in a clear and professional way.
  • Follow safety procedures and recognized testing standards on every job.
Qualifications
  • Experience in construction, materials testing, or a related trade is preferred.
  • NAQTC and ACI certifications are welcome but not required.
  • Willingness to study for and pass NAQTC and ACI exams within an agreed timeframe.
  • Comfort working outdoors and on active construction sites.
  • A detail-oriented approach to testing and record-keeping.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license.
  • Dependability and a genuine interest in learning the trade.
Training & Career Path

New technicians are supported through their NAQTC and ACI certifications. Each certification expands the testing you're qualified to perform and brings added responsibility and higher pay
. Over time, technicians who earn ICC certifications can advance into Special Inspector roles, making this a solid starting point for a career in construction quality assurance.

Schedule

Construction runs on the contractor's timeline, so start times often come early and schedules shift with project needs. Some weekend and occasional night work should be expected.

Compensation

$25+/hour, depending on experience

Starting pay is set primarily by the certifications you hold, along with your construction and testing experience.

Whether you're already certified or ready to start working toward it, we'd like to hear from you.
