The University of Nevada, Reno Extension is seeking an experienced and energetic Community Based Instructor 4 to coordinate the Washoe County 4-H Youth Development Program, which includes In-School, After-School, and Out-of-School learning opportunities for youth across the region.
This position offers an exciting opportunity for a creative, community-minded leader who thrives in a fast-paced and mission-driven environment. The ideal candidate will bring experience in program management and delivery, team leadership, and non-formal education, along with the ability to navigate complex systems while developing innovative, practical solutions that support youth and families.
Because the 4-H calendar includes both high-activity seasons (program launches, fairs, camps, and major community events) and quieter planning periods, this role requires a professional who is adaptable, organized, and comfortable shifting between periods of high energy and reflective planning.
Key Responsibilities- Coordinate and evaluate all aspects of Washoe County’s In‑School, After‑School, Out‑of‑School, and Programs.
- Develop written program plans and deliver high-quality, engaging educational experiences using 4‑H youth development principles.
- Lead, train, and mentor staff and volunteers to build a cohesive and effective team that reflects the community’s diversity.
- Oversee program budgets, approve purchases, and manage educational materials and resources.
- Collect and analyze data to evaluate program outcomes and impact.
- Cultivate relationships with schools, community partners, and families to strengthen participation and visibility.
- Contribute to the growth and sustainability of the Washoe County 4‑H Program through innovation and collaboration.
- This position requires graduation from high school or equivalent education and four (4) years of relevant work experience in areas such as agriculture, horticulture, community development, health and nutrition, human and family development, and natural resources in urban and rural areas;
OR - An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
- Experience supervising, training, and supporting staff and volunteers.
- A valid Class “C” driver’s license or higher operator’s license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
- Successful completion of a background check/fingerprinting.
- Broad knowledge of 4‑H Youth Development and positive youth development principles.
- Strong record-keeping and organizational skills.
- Candidates who are bilingual in English and Spanish are encouraged to apply.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general office equipment.
This position requires working a variable schedule that includes some nights/weekends and travel within assigned locations; this schedule is subject to change based on organizational needs.
Compensation GradeGrade 29
In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
