Job SummaryUnder the general direction of the Administrator of School Counseling, the School Mental Health Professional will assess students’ mental health needs that affect their ability to learn. The professional will provide clinical intervention strategies and treatment opportunities including individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and brief therapeutic interventions. By strengthening students’ learning opportunities and mental health functioning, and ensuring access to mental health services for children and their families, the professional will support success among low‑achieving students and contribute to the district’s educational mission.
Responsibilities• Act as mandated reporter of child abuse.
• Design and implement behavior management programs
• Provide referrals and support resources for families.
• Conduct clinical assessments, planning, and supervision for students’ mental health needs.
• Advise administrators, social workers, counselors, and staff on issues impacting student achievement.
• Participate in school counselor training, program development, and enrichment activities.
• Join crisis intervention teams and intervention assistance teams.
• Support district MTSS framework for organizing student intervention services.
• Facilitate individual and group interventions with students.
• Consult with teachers, administrators, and parents regarding classroom behavior, policies, and procedures.
• Respond to suicidal statements with district screening and assessment protocols.
• Provide direct and indirect services using evidence‑based mental health interventions.
• Conduct home visits when appropriate.
• Maintain ethical guidelines and licensure requirements, including caseload limits.
• Promote clinical mental health internship placements.
• Develop and provide professional development training on school‑based mental health services.
• Collaborate with district and community partners to promote sustainable funding.
• Implement tiered mental health promotion programs.
• Document services per district and Infinite Campus protocols.
- Education: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to mental health in schools.
- Experience: Three (3) years of full‑time (or part‑time equivalent) school mental health experience OR three (3) years of full‑time (or part‑time equivalent) experience with mental health services for school‑aged children.
- Knowledge: Clinical evidence‑based treatment modalities; ethical frameworks guiding school‑based mental health practice; K‑12 at‑risk students and families; theories of human behavior and development; multidisciplinary activities; characteristics of the pupil population; public education legislation and due process; behavior management; family systems theory and techniques; parent education; student assessment methods and procedures; consultation methods; program development systems and strategies; special education policy and procedures.
- Skills: Exceptional interpersonal skills; marriage and family counseling; clinical counseling; autonomous work; program development; writing, evaluating, and coordinating school social work programs; communicating with district personnel, students, parents, and community agencies; utilizing objective measures of adaptive behavior, self‑esteem, social skills, emotional health, and interests.
- Licenses/Certificates: Valid Nevada Education License in School Mental Health; valid Nevada driver’s license; outside of Department of Education license as a mental health professional issued by a Nevada agency or board.
- Special Considerations: Must be willing and able to work flexible scheduling including evenings and weekends.
