Overview
The Reno Police Department is hiring for the Winter 2026 Academy, anticipated to begin in January 2026. Civil Service will review applications as they are received. Candidates must complete a City of Reno employment application with all required documentation and successfully complete all testing with a passing score. This is an open competitive opportunity for all individuals who meet the minimum qualifications.
This continuous recruitment will establish an eligibility list for current and future vacancies.

This is the entry-level classification for Police Officer Recruits who will participate in a 22-week Police Academy. Upon graduation, Recruits will be promoted to Police Officers with a starting annual salary of $72,015.20.

Responsibilities- Police Officer Recruit: attend the Law Enforcement Academy designated by the Police Department; comply with rules of conduct in the Academy Recruit Manual and City/Department policies; complete written reports and oral presentations as required; participate in Academy training and pass all academic tests and quizzes; participate in physical fitness training and meet standards; participate in Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Emergency Vehicle Operations Course, First Aid/CPR, and Force on Force training with passing scores.
- Police Officer: patrol assigned areas, investigate disturbances, make arrests and book prisoners; conduct initial and supplementary investigations; interview witnesses and complainants; refer to the complete list of essential job functions for the Police Officer classification.
- Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED).
- U.S. citizen.
- Valid driver’s license.
- At least 20 years of age.
- Background investigation will be conducted; individuals will be provided with a background information packet and must complete it within the specified time.
- Eligible candidates selected for hire will undergo polygraph, medical, vision, psychological, and drug screening at the City’s expense to evaluate capability to perform duties.
- Examination process includes a written test weighted as part of the final score; multiple test dates may be offered and scheduling is first-come, first-served. Notification to schedule tests will be sent after application acceptance; testing may include remote options for eligible candidates outside Reno.
