Position: School Police Recruit

Summary

Under immediate supervision of the Chief of School Police or designee, the School Police Recruit receives instruction in the police approved law enforcement academy curriculum and participates in training exercises designed to simulate situations encountered by a police officer. Instruction and training are provided in a formal classroom setting and in practical field exercises.

School Police Recruit

Incumbents of this civilian, non-commissioned class are assigned to the Academy for the purpose of receiving instruction and training in the duties and responsibilities of a police officer. A School Police Recruit is restricted from performing in the capacity of a WCSD School Police Officer. Upon successful completion of the academy, School Police Recruits are sworn in and promoted to School Police Officer.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Receive classroom instruction and participate in field training exercises in law enforcement techniques, policies, and procedures as they relate to the WCSD School Police, including but not limited to:
  • Learn weaponry and associated safety practices.
  • Learn State and Federal laws relating to arrest, search and seizure, traffic, and narcotics.
  • Learn the (10) code; commit to memory, and use code while operating radio and communicating with law enforcement personnel.
  • Learn proper force continuum relating to a variety of situations; defend and protect self in physical confrontations.
  • Learn to evaluate situations and determine appropriate action to be taken; to anticipate situations and problems and initiate effective strategies; and recognize safety hazards and exercise caution in all actions.
  • Learn to operate WCSD School Police vehicle safely in normal and emergency situations.
  • Learn to operate various equipment, including radios and other equipment used in police activities in addition to National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) systems.
  • Communicate with a variety of people in various situations using persuasion, tact, self‑restraint, common sense, judgment, strategy, and interpersonal skills.
  • Give and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Write and dictate clearly and concisely using grammatically correct English.
  • Read and interpret complex documents; collect, organize, and analyze a variety of information and apply results to police activities.
  • Organize and prioritize work.
  • Observe, assimilate, and recall facts and details.
  • Administer basic first aid/CPR and maintain annual certification.
  • Participate in Firearms training and obtain a passing qualification score for each firearm.
  • Participate in the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course training and obtain a passing score on the final proficiency test.
  • Complete First Aid and CPR training and obtain a passing score on a final written exam.
  • Participate in Force on Force training and obtain a passing score on the final proficiency test.
