Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Nursing Manager or Director of Nursing the incumbent promotes and supports the four fundamentals of People, Service, Quality and Stewardship and campus initiatives.

Nature and Scope

Renown Health nursing leadership is a shared responsibility between the Nursing Coordinators, Directors, Managers and Supervisors in resolving problems related to patient care, and in maintaining the quality of care planned for the patients in a cost containment environment.

The Nursing Coordinator serves as an administrative resource person and patient advocate.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supports nursing leadership in the provision of quality care, maintains productivity, and patient throughput.
  • Assigns or floats staff to meet patient care needs and address productivity standards, adjusting for census, skill mix, and sick calls. Staff assignments are based upon staff education; preparation, training, and specific patient care needs.
  • Performs daily rounds on the nursing units to ensure the provision of quality patient care, core measure compliance, and support patient satisfaction measures.
  • Provides immediate attention to customer service issues and service recovery; documents as appropriate and informs involved leadership of concerns from staff, patients, family, visitors and medical staff. Investigates as needed.
  • Demonstrates professional behaviors and adherence to the Codes of conduct and Renown policies and procedures.
  • Provides an excellent public image for Renown Health.
  • Represents management policies and communicates with staff to support the corporate mission.
  • Communicates patient condition reports and pertinent data to families, friends, and media as authorized and in compliance with HIPAA.
  • Supports ancillary service areas.
  • Facilitates patient throughput with bed assignments taking into account patient care needs, level of care and staffing capabilities; assures COBRA law compliance for all transfers and when accepting admissions from other facilities.
  • Responds to Code Red and Code Blue pages (as appropriate, based on certification and cost center) and follows through on disposition of patients.
  • Assists Managers/directors in counseling and discipline process, and investigatory follow up.
  • Assumes administrative role when administrative personnel are not present. Effectively communicates with Chief Nursing Officer, Administrator or Administrator on Call when necessary.
  • Applicable to Department 400:
    Provides after hours pharmacy duties and maintains integrity of the After-hours pharmacy in compliance with Joint Commission requirements.

Nursing is a truly dynamic profession. The Nursing Coordinator must be current in changes in the nursing process, new procedures, and new technology, as well as current policies and procedures. The Nursing Coordinator is also expected to assume Incident Commander role until role relinquished in the event of a large-scale emergency or disaster. This position has internal contact with all ancillary hospital departments and the entire hospital staff, as related to the patients, employees, physicians, and Administrator On‑Call, or directors, as appropriate.

This position requires communication skills related to providing information to patients and their families/friends, physicians, transport services, other hospitals, mortuaries, coroners, organ procurement organizations, law enforcement agencies, news media, nursing homes, and other agencies.

The Nursing Coordinator may serve on Leadership meeting; such as, the Code Blue Committee, Environment of Care, Quality Committees, and any other committees as requested by the Manager of Quality and Patient Safety, Directors of Nursing or Chief Nursing Officer.

This position has the authority to make specific decisions regarding patient placement inclusive of: allocation of nursing personnel; approval of overtime; implementation of diversion plan; settle disputes between employees, solve patient problems; and assist in communications regarding doctor/nurse disagreements; assist in determining when to contact a doctor regarding a patient's condition; facilitate transfer of a critical patient to another…
