Under the direction of the Manager or Director and in conjunction with the Shared Governance Council, this position is accountable for directing and coordinating the delivery of patient care and the general functioning of the nursing unit. The role of the Nurse Supervisor is to assist in achievement of organizational goals through and with the effort of others.

Nature and Scope

This is a clinically focused position that is challenged to maintain a well‑organized and functional Out‑Patient Infusion Clinics that allows for the enhancement of evidence‑based practice and continuity of patient care throughout the healthcare continuum. The Nurse Supervisor coordinates care and collaborates with other professional disciplines as needed, to optimize patient outcomes. The oncology treatment centers are outpatient, hospital‑based infusion centers that provide cancer therapies to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients as well as infusion services for non‑oncology patients.

The Nurse Supervisor acts as a role model, resource, and coach to all nursing staff to provide ongoing support for professional development, maintenance of the standards of care and quality outcomes.

The Nurse Supervisor facilitates professional relationships between physicians, nursing and interdisciplinary teams to provide a patient‑focused plan of care.

The Nurse Supervisor requires leadership skills and flexibility to adjust hours to be a resource to staff. The Nurse Supervisor will be responsible for engaging the nursing staff to provide evidence‑based practice, promoting desired patient outcomes and ensuring that practice is congruent with the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.

Technological advances dictate that the Nurse Supervisor is well‑versed in procedures common to the department or unit served. In addition, proficiency in the techniques of leadership and adult learning theories are necessary to coordinate the activities of all health team members, and to maintain positively engaged, competent nursing staff.

Other challenges of this position include the ability to recognize dynamics of change and respond appropriately within the context of accepted current theory. Creativity and innovation is expected from the incumbent to help staff function as a high‑performance work team and to promote staff retention.

The Nurse Supervisor is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of adolescent, adult and geriatric patients and families. The Nurse Supervisor must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensory, psychosocial and safety appropriate to the age of the patient served and meet the standards of quality as measured by the unit/department Competence with Special Populations standard.
