Position: Patient Care Assistant/MA - Phlebotomy (2025-1410)

Location: VMC Main Campus, Renton, WA

Department: Nurse Float

Shift: Night

Position Type: FTE 0.9

Salary: $24.71 - $39.31 per hour (DOE)

This position is a Patient Care Assistant performing routine nursing services under the supervision of a professional nurse or Clinical Administrative Resource (CAR). The role includes phlebotomy duties and assists with clinical support tasks. The schedule is variable and the candidate must be available for night shifts.

Prerequisites
  • Current licensure to practice in Washington as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
  • AHA BLS for healthcare providers.
  • One year Patient Care experience preferred.
  • MA - Phlebotomy certification required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
Qualifications
  • Capable of comprehending, executing, and acting within scope of practice.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills in a diverse population.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with the physical and emotional development of all age groups.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Report significant signs and symptoms to the Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Clinical Administrative Resource.
  • Observe and report changes in patient condition such as level of consciousness, mobility, breathing pattern, skin color, pain, difficulty swallowing, new wound drainage, or decreased output.
  • Identify equipment that is alarming or malfunctioning.
  • Communicate concerns related to patient or family behavior, emotional status, or compliance issues.
  • Respond appropriately to cardiac/pulmonary arrest, psychiatric emergencies, postpartum hemorrhage, and newborn emergencies.
  • Demonstrate safe use of patient care equipment.
  • Understand developmental and behavioral characteristics of neonates, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.
  • Perform phlebotomy as requested according to correct procedure.
  • Maintain biannual phlebotomy certification.
  • Perform chem strip procedure according to procedure.
