Job OverviewThe staff RN is a licensed professional who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame. The RN provides safe, quality care utilizing the nursing process as the foundation for clinical practice and reports to the Nurse Manager or Assistant Nurse Manager.
Responsibilities- Assess, guide, direct, and facilitate workflow on the unit; recognize when the charge nurse should assume a patient assignment.
- Make staff assignments that reflect patient acuity, continuity of care, and staff competency.
- Mentor staff, float, and agency personnel regarding unit/department policies, procedures, and annual goals.
- Integrate new staff and agency staff into the unit culture.
- Act as a leader and role model for clinical staff.
- Serve as a clinical resource and demonstrate safe use of patient care equipment; able to teach others.
- Identify and assign resource RN for LPN, PCA, and MST as needed.
- Monitor and evaluate nursing care by direct observation, consultation, and patient rounds.
- Assess unit safety during patient rounds and report or correct deficiencies.
- Maintain awareness of Joint Commission standards, state codes, and practice acts; monitor documentation and compliance.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
- Respond to patient and family concerns and complaints.
- Report significant events to supervisors and activate the chain of command per policy.
- Provide input into performance appraisal of clinical staff on assigned shift.
- Evaluate and provide coverage for breaks; adjust staffing during the shift and determine staffing needs for the following shift.
- Maintain fiscal responsibility by monitoring and adjusting staffing during shift.
- Maintain personal competencies for direct patient care and team leadership.
- Communicate and collaborate with bed placement and clinical resources to expedite placement.
- BSN preferred.
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in Washington.
- Successful completion of a graduate nurse residency program orientation or six months’ experience as an RN.
- AHA BLS for healthcare providers required.
- Demonstrates leadership skills with ability to lead and manage a team, utilize clinical judgment, inquiry, innovation, and systems thinking.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Adherence to the Professional Appearance Policy and dress code.
- Effective interpersonal skills with a community‑centered, compassionate approach.
- Excellent customer service skills and a caring environment.
- Knowledge of ANA Standards and the Nurse Practice Act.
- Proficiency in electronic documentation systems, including order entry and email.
- Self‑directed in advancing professional practice through continuing education and research.
- BSN.
- Experience:
Two years’ practice in clinical nursing/leadership within the area of responsibility preferred. - Unit‑specific prerequisites as specified in the addendum.
Must be able to provide safe patient handling including lifting up to 40 pounds, operating patient lifting equipment, stooping, bending, reaching, crouching, squatting, standing and walking for extended periods, and participating in team lifting. Requires full body range of motion, manual dexterity, and eye‑hand coordination.
Unit‑Specific Requirements (Addendum)Certification and experience must be met for units such as Emergency, PACU, Endoscopy, Perioperative, Admit & Discharge, Critical Care, Labor & Delivery, Medical‑Surgical, Oncology, Neonatal, and others as specified in the addendum.
