Job Description: The staff RN is a licensed professional who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame. This individual provides safe, quality care to these patients utilizing the nursing process as the basis for clinical practice.
Prerequisites and Certifications- BSN preferred; current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in Washington.
- Successful completion of a graduate nurse residency program orientation or six months experience as an RN.
- AHA BLS for healthcare providers required.
- Unit‑specific prerequisites – see addendum.
- For Emergency Department RN: ACLS & PALS within 3 months of hire, NIHSS certification within 3 months, TNCC within 12 months, ENPC within 12 months.
- For other units: various specific certifications and experience as outlined in the addendum.
- Demonstrates leadership skills with ability to lead and manage a team; uses clinical judgment, inquiry, innovation, and systems thinking.
- Effective oral and written communication; adheres to Professional Appearance Policy.
- Compassionate interpersonal skills; serves diverse and vulnerable populations.
- Excellent customer service skills and teamwork.
- Operates within ANA Standards and Nurse Practice Act.
- Proficient in electronic documentation and communication.
- Self‑directed in continuing education and research.
- Assesses, guides, directs, and facilitates workflow on the unit; recognizes when charge nurse assignment is required.
- Makes staff assignments reflecting patient acuity, continuity, and competency.
- Mentors staff, float, and agency personnel; integrates new staff into unit culture.
- Functions as a leader and role model; acts as a clinical resource.
- Monitors and evaluates nursing care; conducts direct observation and patient rounds.
- Assesses unit/environmental safety; reports and corrects deficiencies.
- Makes decisions regarding staffing during shifts; maintains fiscal responsibility.
- Communicates with bed placement and clinical resources; responds to patient/family concerns.
- Documents performance appraisal data for staff; reports significant events per policy.
- Maintains competencies for direct patient care and team leadership.
Muscle‑strength lifting tasks up to 40 lbs; operating patient lifting equipment; stooping, bending, reaching, crouching, squatting; standing/walking for long periods; full body range of motion; corrected vision, hearing; color distinction.
Requires safe patient handling as per VMC guidelines; adequate equipment use; support the all‑day dressing, precautions, exposures, etc.
