Prerequisites
  • High School Graduate or equivalent (G.E.D) preferred
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license and ability to be insured by VMC’s carrier
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience as a Security Officer, Law Enforcement and/or Military Service preferred, excellent customer service skills will be considered
  • Ability to comprehend and translate the Revised Code of Washington
  • Basic keyboarding skills (25 wpm) and experience using Windows applications preferred
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification or obtain within 90 days of hire
  • No convictions of any crime other than misdemeanor traffic violations
  • Must successfully pass Work Steps pre‑hire screening for minimum physical requirements of the position

  • Evidence of excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with accurate spelling and legible writing/typing
  • Ability to multitask, exercise good judgment, and work independently
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills
  • Ability to handle telephone calls and personal interactions with tact, poise, courtesy and respect
  • Neat and well‑groomed appearance, following hospital personnel standards

Unique Physical/Mental Demands, Environment, and Working Conditions

In addition to the generic Service Partner job description, the Security Officer may be required to provide safe patient handling under VMC’s Safe Patient Handling guidelines. This includes moving or lifting patients or objects of varying weights, operating patient lifting equipment, standing or sitting for extended periods, stooping, bending, reaching from floor to overhead levels, and performing tasks such as pushing patients in wheelchairs from hospital entrances to care locations.

The role also involves:

  • Entering data into the computer
  • Walking across the campus, climbing stairwells, traversing rooftops and uneven terrain outdoors
  • Restraining and physically apprehending individuals as required
  • Conducting normal security business immediately following exertion
  • Maintaining vision and hearing within normal range, including depth perception and color discrimination
  • Being flexible and willing to work a variety of hours, indoor and outdoor, potentially under communicable disease risk and adverse weather conditions
  • Assisting with patient and staff transportation during inclement weather and spreading de‑icer on campus roads and walkways
  • Covering duties such as operating the shuttle bus, cycling or walking to parking structures, and performing security/disaster duties
  • Simultaneously performing several tasks and organizing schedules
Performance Responsibilities
  • Provide reasonable security and safety for visitors, patients, employees, and physicians at Valley Medical Center
  • Oversee enforcement of administrative policies, prevent crimes against property, and perform initial investigations as needed
  • Lock and unlock the building as necessary for opening and closing based on shift
  • Patrol the exterior and interior of the building per assigned shift
  • Monitor CCTV system and operate electronic monitoring equipment
  • Respond to lobby conditions, communicate with environmental services and facilities, and seek assistance for unacceptable appearance
  • Monitor the ED lobby to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for patients, staff, and visitors
  • Maintain vehicles, including gas, oil, fluid levels, and cleaning as requested
  • Provide escort services when needed
