Job Description

The City of Renton's Public Works Maintenance Services department is recruiting to fill two Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic 1/2 vacancies. The Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic utilizes their skills to work on a variety of motor vehicles and Public Works maintenance equipment. The Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic performs preventative maintenance, inspections, and other services on all inventoried equipment including passenger vehicles, dump trucks, heavy equipment, and a variety of other City of Renton maintenance equipment.

Contribute to the City's vision, mission, and goals in the performance of all job duties. This position is part of a series and salary placement depends on the education, experience, and skill set of the incumbent.

2026 Annual Salary

Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic 1: $72,444 – $88,188

Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic 2: $79,992 – $97,368

Essential Functions (Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic
1)
  • Maintain adequate supply of fuel, oil and propane gas; measure and record fuel tank and propane tank levels; inspect for water content; operate automated fuel pump controls and verify fuel tank computer levels and compare with manual measurements; deliver fuel tickets to office personnel.
  • Service vehicles; dispense gas, diesel and propane fuels; check and add oil as needed for engines and automotive transmissions.
  • Clean windshields; replace wiper blades as needed; check radiators.
  • Maintain adequate supply of materials for the fuel island; maintain fuel island in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Pick up parts and supplies as needed.
  • Inspect and install brake pads and shoes on cars, trucks and other equipment.
  • Tune small engines and cars when needed.
  • Assist mechanics as needed.
  • Sharpen chainsaw chains as needed.
  • Perform routine semi‑skilled work in the maintenance of automotive vehicles and other equipment; tune vehicle engines and small engines.
  • Inspect brakes and replace pads, drums, wheel bearings, rotors and seals as necessary.
  • Respond to emergency requests; drive to City sites to perform repairs to City vehicles such as changing tires.
  • Lubricate parts and vehicles and change oil and filters on City‑owned equipment; inspect and repair tire punctures and damage as appropriate; recharge and install new batteries; replace headlights and taillights and turn signals; clean and replace carburetor air cleaners.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance, safety checks and repairs; maintain routine safety records on City vehicles.
  • Operate a variety of equipment including tire changing machine, compressors, shop vehicles, oil‑dispensing machine, ohmmeters, test equipment, engine analyzer, pressure testers, floor jacks, forklift and a variety of power and hand tools and equipment.
  • Maintain mechanic repair shop areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assure security of vehicles and facilities at end of work shift.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records including fuel tickets, parts charge‑outs, fuel consumption and time records.
  • Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.
  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
  • Participate in and help provide cross‑training in processes as directed by management to ensure a well‑rounded team for coverage purposes.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies.
