Senior Control Systems Engineer – Bechtel Corporation

Project Overview

Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility.

This is a one‑of‑a‑kind opportunity, and we are looking for the talent that will help expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long‑lasting energy future for generations to come.

Upon initial hire and onboarding, the position will require full‑time presence in the Reston, Virginia project office. Part‑time telework flexibility may be an option as the project progresses.

Job Summary

As a Senior Control Systems Engineer, you will plan and conduct independent work, requiring judgement in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. You will have technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating assignments. You must have a strong working knowledge of the principles and practices related to Control Systems Engineering and understand standard engineering work planning, scheduling, and cost estimating.

In this role, you will report to an Engineering Supervisor and will interface and coordinate with other Control Systems work groups, other engineering disciplines, other functional departments, business partners and the client in the development of the design.

The ideal candidate will have solid experience in control system design and will be capable of developing design documents that incorporate the applicable design. In addition, it will be required that the candidate have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), and can be the “face” of Bechtel, promoting our leadership, quality, and safety values, to external partners including vendors, construction companies, and other subcontractors.

This role will be based in Reston, VA, with the potential for periodic business travel to Poland offices, business partner offices, supplier facilities and jobsites, as required.

Major Responsibilities
  • Design of Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs) for various plant systems
  • Participation in the formulation of conceptual design
  • Review of control system network architecture
  • Origination and review of system design criteria and system design descriptions
  • Specification and application of instrumentation and general control valves
  • Generation of instrument data sheets and material requisitions
  • Origination and review of setpoint calculations
  • Design and review of binary and analog control logic
  • Allocation of facility control systems I/O
  • Design and review of control cabinets
  • Data entry to instrumentation, valve, and I/O databases
  • Design and application of tubing and instrument installations, etc.
  • Review of supplier (or subcontractor) provided data and documentation
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and other functions
  • Provide technical assistance and mentorship to more junior engineers and designers
  • Coordinate with business partner and client representatives, as needed
  • Conduct technical presentations related to Control Systems Engineering design
Education And Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s of Science or advanced degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Automation/Controls/Instrumentation, Electro‑Mechanical, or Electronics Engineering from an accredited university or college and 8‑10 years of relevant work experience, or 12‑14 years of relevant work experience.

Required Knowledge And Skills
  • Experience in nuclear plant design (commercial power plant or DOE facility)
  • Experience in working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME‑NQA‑1
  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards (e.g., ISA, ASME and/or ANSI/IEEE)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 application suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, Visio, PowerPoint, Power BI, etc.)
