Responsibilities
  • Performs testing in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to set priorities.
  • Completes work assigned during shift, and leaves minimal amount for next shift.
  • Maintains standards in ER, timed, and STAT testing.
  • Responds to changes in work as necessary; continually uses time to departmental advantage.
  • Writes legibly and accurately, with complete documentation.
  • Documents quality control procedures performed.
  • Organizes the work area to provide a neat appearance.
  • Cleans up work space at the end of shift.
  • Follows hospital policies and guidelines regarding waste management.
  • Completes all work during shift without sacrificing quality of care.
  • Verifies the name of tube or specimen with requisition, investigates abnormal results.
  • Documents preventive maintenance performed.
  • Ensures that supplies are available and notifies appropriate personnel when low.
  • Consults with appropriate personnel when test findings are abnormal and when difficulties are encountered in testing.
  • Correlates test results with diagnoses and questions incompatible results.
  • Demonstrates broad knowledge of all laboratory departments.
  • Demonstrates ability to work in all areas.
  • Follows through with any incomplete procedures to ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Understands the needs of others in relation to laboratory operations in areas other than assigned.
  • Performs duties in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision required.
  • Regularly helps others; performs duties that need to be performed, especially when unassigned.
  • Actively participates in phlebotomy and the accession responsibilities.
  • Dresses according to the hospital and departmental dress code.
  • Accepts and profits from constructive criticism.
  • Has complete understanding of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Assists in orientation of new staff as necessary.
  • Demonstrates an ability to assess the situation, consider alternatives, and choose the appropriate action.
  • Performs as a self‑starter who needs no reminders of duties and tasks that need to be completed.
  • Answers telephones and retrieves as much information as possible from files, rather than forwarding calls.
  • Performs duties as assigned by the medical and technical director. Puts the needs of others first.
  • Performs competency and proficiency challenges in a timely and acceptable manner.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Associate degree in Medical Technology (MLT), ASCP equivalent or eligible or graduate of an approved Medical Laboratory Technician School (2‑year program). MLT (ASCP), or equivalent or eligible or high school diploma and one (1) year in a medical laboratory (military or non‑military). Registry eligible.

Experience:

  • Two years laboratory experience. Computer skills.
