| Full Time, Part Time, Flexible Working | Salary: £35,875 (39 hour week with 20% unsocial hours) | Closing date 2nd July 2026
Prison officers protect the public and help make an impact on prisoners' lives. In this fast‑paced role you will act as a peacekeeper, counsellor or teacher, working directly with prisoners to maintain safety and support their rehabilitation.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain safety and order within the prison, responding to incidents and deterring offenders.
- Provide counseling, teaching and support to prisoners to aid their rehabilitation.
- Work as part of a team, supporting colleagues and collaborating to safeguard the prison environment.
- Operate across a variety of shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
- Minimum age 18 years.
- Meet Civil Service nationality requirements (see below).
- Pass a medical and fitness assessment, including eyesight and hearing tests.
- Adhere to tattoo policy: visible tattoos must not be offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating; facial tattoos are generally not acceptable unless for cultural, religious or medical reasons.
- For high‑security (category A) prisons, have resided in the UK for the last 3 years.
- Be able to communicate and influence others in English;
Welsh acceptable if specified for a role.
- Nationals of the Republic of Ireland.
- Nationals of Commonwealth countries with right to work in the UK.
- Nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and family members with settled or pre‑settled status under the EUSS.
- Individuals with limited leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible under EUSS on or before 31 December 2020.
- Turkish nationals and certain family members with accrued right to work in the Civil Service.
- Strong communication and influencing skills.
- Commitment to quality service.
- Caring and understanding empathy.
- Initial training: 37‑hour week. Post‑training: 37, 39 or 41‑hour week with salary reflecting hours.
- Annual holiday: 25 days, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service.
- Paid time off for public holidays and one extra privilege day.
- Civil Service pension with employer contributions of 28.97 %.
- Cycle‑to‑work scheme, travel loans and additional benefits.
A driving licence and own transport are beneficial but not essential unless specified. Shift start and finish times are fixed; applicants must ensure timely arrival.
