Under the direct supervision of the Director of Pharmacy Infrastructure and Support Operations, this role is responsible for procurement and disposition of all pharmacy‑related departmental pharmaceuticals and maintenance of pharmacy medication and supply inventory to support the provision of cost‑effective patient‑focused pharmacy services. The manager ensures compliance with the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA), trains and manages daily activities of inventory specialist team members, and supervises inventory specialist teams and guides store‑level pharmacists on order placement, inventory, and fulfillment processes.
Additionally, the manager oversaw packaging, storage, and packaging safety, and develops strategy and key performance goals for the department to improve costs, efficiency, patient care, and satisfaction.
- Establish and monitor inventory and drug budgets for the pharmacy.
- Analyze budget variances and lead initiatives to control costs.
- Set key performance indicators to guide purchasing and inventory within set targets.
- Manage day‑to‑day operations in real time, focusing on purchasing, receiving, and inventory control.
- Supervise inventory specialist team, providing training, delegation, mentoring, and professional development.
- Oversee training of pharmacy employees on stocking, monitoring outdated products, and processing returns.
- Oversee ordering and receiving of all drugs and supplies at all pharmacy locations.
- Co‑ordinate the return of identified eligible pharmaceuticals.
- Coordinate procurement and maintenance of medication and non‑drug supplies necessary for prescription fulfillment.
- Ensure proper rotation and maintenance of inventory and coordinate quarterly removal of expired drugs.
- Coordinate bi‑annual pharmacy medication inventory for all outpatient pharmacies.
- Process drug recalls in a timely manner.
- Manage short or long‑term backorders and medication shortages.
- Maintain accurate flow of purchasing and receipts with Accounts Payable, resolve billing issues, and hold team accountable.
- Generate purchasing and inventory reports and analyses as requested by senior leadership.
- Prepare, secure authorized signatures, and process all purchase orders.
- Monitor purchasing contract compliance and market share quarterly.
- Assist in development and preparation of bids for pharmaceutical contracts.
- Develop and oversee processes to optimize utilization of the 340B drug program.
- Establish best practices for product selection to meet pharmacy needs.
- Manage preferred drug selection in the pharmacy management system and guide staff on preferred drug options.
- Manage pharmacy department temperature monitoring program.
- Oversee and comply with DSCSA requirements.
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Registered Technician with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy required
- Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician required
- 340B Apexus Certified Expert (ACE) preferred
- Supply Chain and Inventory Management Advanced Certificate preferred
- At least five years of pharmacy‑related experience, including drug purchasing and inventory management.
- Three years of management experience or leading teams.
- Mathematical skills, knowledge of purchasing, and material management.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving ability.
- Effective interpersonal skills to interact with staff, patients, families, physicians, colleagues, and others.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize essential tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Leadership ability to guide, direct, and mentor staff.
- Experience with Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Outlook) and web browsers; experience with Pharmacy Management software or ability to learn required.
