Public Health Laboratory Assistant Chief
Join the Ohio Department of Health as the Public Health Laboratory Assistant Chief – a critical role that supports laboratory operations, program oversight, and strategic decision‑making.
What You'll Do- Assist the bureau chief in administration of laboratory functions and assigned projects.
- Act on behalf of the bureau chief by making programmatic and policy decisions, attend meetings, and provide signature authority.
- Provide administrative and operational guidance for the laboratory and assigned programs.
- Coordinate and evaluate current program policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws.
- Purchase, develop, and coordinate data management systems to support reporting requirements.
- Direct and oversee assigned staff through monitoring daily activities, conducting interviews, evaluating candidates, completing employee performance evaluations.
- Lead workforce development initiatives by coordinating cross‑training opportunities, supporting professional certifications, and promoting participation in CDC and Association of Public Health Laboratories training.
- Act as liaison between ODH and a wide range of external stakeholders (e.g., other agency committees, work groups, governmental, private sector, and other state programs).
- 5 years’ experience in planning and administering health programs, or education and experience equivalent to a graduate core program in public health, health administration, preventive medicine, social work, nursing, or public policy & management.
- Experience as Health Planning Administrator 1 (or equivalent) with at least 2 years in the role, or Health Planning Administrator 2 with 12 months, or equivalent class qualifications as noted above.
- Experience in clinical laboratory operations and newborn screening is highly desirable.

Exempt hourly position, pay range $43.09 per hour (15 on E1 Exempt Pay Range Schedule). Normal working hours Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm (flexible schedule).
