We are dedicated to working with Wisconsinites while preserving and enhancing the natural resources of Wisconsin. In partnership with individuals and organizations, DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.
The Wisconsin DNR is hiring two LTE (Limited Term Employee) Forestry Technicians Advanced in Rhinelander, WI. These positions may be used to fill future similar vacancies. For current opportunities, visit DNR wisc.jobs.
Position SummaryThese positions will work on a wide variety of forestry projects within the Division of Forestry, Forest Economics and Ecology section. Current projects focus on research and application of science to forest ecology and management, providing opportunities to grow and develop a varied skillset.
Current Research Studies- Desired Regeneration through Assisted Migration (DREAM) – seedling measurements, data logger maintenance, etc.
- Deer‑Forest Relationships – deer browse assessments, forest regeneration monitoring.
- Garlic Mustard Allelopathy – herbicide treatment efficacy, counting plants, soil sampling, measuring ground cover.
Other work may include forest assessments, tree and plant species identification, study plot establishment, and data entry and management.
Field Work (≈90%)- Forest understory and overstory assessments
- Data logger deployment and maintenance
- Long‑term project infrastructure maintenance
- Deer browse assessments
- Seedling measurements
- Forest regeneration monitoring
- Ground cover estimates with quadrats
- Data entry and management
- Equipment maintenance
Pay: $20.50 – $23.50 per hour, salary schedule 06‑14.

QualificationsRequired:
- Valid driver’s license.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Minimum two (2) years licensed driving experience.
- No more than three (3) moving violations or at‑fault accidents in the past two (2) years.
- No OWI/DUI violations within the past year.
Minimally Qualified Candidates:
- Physical ability to navigate uneven terrain carrying up to 40 lbs of gear.
- Education or experience in Wisconsin tree and shrub identification.
- Ability to navigate using GPS, map, and compass.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Access, Word).
- Experience with data entry & QA/QC.
- Detail oriented.
Preferred:
- Experience with chain saw use.
- Excellent organizational and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Experience in field forestry and/or field research.
