Summary
In collaboration with the classroom team, this role assists the Special Education Teacher with the implementation of effective academic and social‑emotional programming for assigned students.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities- Consistently applies the corporate values of respect, honesty and fairness and the constant pursuit of excellence in improving health status.
- Assists in the formulation of social‑emotional and behavioral programming consistent with students’ IEPs.
- Implements social‑emotional and behavioral programming consistent with students’ IEPs, including assisting students with activities of daily life such as toileting and other forms of self‑care.
- Collects and manages data on social‑emotional and behavioral functioning for assigned students.
- Prepares and presents verbal and/or written reports concerning social‑emotional and behavioral functioning for assigned students.
- Assists in implementation of the academic and social‑emotional curricula as directed by the classroom teacher and team leader.
- Provides academic support to students as directed by the classroom teacher.
- Prepares and submits required paperwork for the student record.
- Attends and participates in classroom team meetings and other student‑related meetings as assigned.
- Attends and participates in supervisory sessions, staff meetings or other meetings as assigned.
- Observes all Bradley Schools policies, rules and regulations.
Baccalaureate Degree preferred with a major in education or related human service fields.
Basic knowledge of data entry/management programs such as Excel. For those without this background, Excel training will be provided.
Experience and Skills- Bradley Hospital Safety Care Certification.
- Prior experience working with children is helpful.
- Ability to work independently within department policies and practice, referring complex problems to a supervisor.
- Experience in a psychiatric setting under stressful conditions associated with care of psychiatrically impaired, aggressive, and sometimes self‑injurious students.
- Proficiency in de‑escalation techniques to minimize need for physical intervention.
- Capacity to remain calm during a crisis situation, make quick rational decisions, and prioritize student care needs to maintain a therapeutic environment and ensure safety.
- Ability to participate in the physical management of students, including safe body positioning, blocking and deflecting aggression, and physically holding struggling students using approved methods.
- Physical requirements:
lift up to fifty pounds, reach with hands and arms, grasp and hold, bend/squat/kneel without limitation, and escort students for short distances; occasional running for short distances, frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
