Senior Electrical Design Engineer - Power Systems

Our client, a leading organization in the Energy sector, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Electrical Design Engineer specializing in Power Systems to join their team in Richards Bay, Kwa Zulu-Natal. This role is essential for the design and implementation of complex electrical systems for large-scale energy projects, including power generation, transmission, and distribution. You will be responsible for leading design efforts, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and mentoring junior engineers.

• Lead the electrical design for power systems projects, including substations, transmission lines, and generation facilities.
• Perform power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, stability, and protection coordination analysis using software like ETAP or PSS/E.
• Develop detailed electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams.
• Specify electrical equipment such as transformers, switch gear, circuit breakers, generators, and motors.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant national and international standards (e.g., SANS, IEC, IEEE).
• Conduct technical reviews of designs prepared by other engineers and technicians.
• Collaborate with project managers, civil/structural engineers, and procurement teams.
• Provide technical support during the construction and commissioning phases of projects.
• Mentor and guide junior electrical engineers and designers.
• Stay updated on the latest technologies and best practices in electrical power systems engineering.

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Power Systems.
• A minimum of 8 years of experience in electrical design engineering, with a significant focus on power systems in the energy sector.
• Proven experience in conducting power system studies using industry-standard software.
• Strong knowledge of electrical equipment, protection systems, and grid codes.
• Familiarity with relevant South African and international electrical standards.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and design skills.
• Strong communication, leadership, and teamwork abilities.
• Professional registration as a Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng) with ECSA is highly desirable.
• Experience with renewable energy integration is a plus.
