Chief Electrical Engineer - Power Grid Modernization

Our client, a major utility company at the forefront of electrical infrastructure development, is seeking a highly experienced Chief Electrical Engineer to lead critical power grid modernization initiatives in Richards Bay, Kwa Zulu-Natal . This senior leadership role is essential for enhancing the reliability, efficiency, and capacity of the region's electrical grid, focusing on smart grid technologies and renewable energy integration within the Energy sector.

The candidate will oversee complex engineering projects, manage technical teams, and drive innovation in power distribution and transmission. • Lead the strategic planning, design, and implementation of power grid modernization projects, including smart grid technologies, SCADA systems, and advanced metering infrastructure.
• Oversee the engineering and technical aspects of substation design, transmission line upgrades, and distribution network enhancements.
• Develop and manage project budgets, timelines, and resource allocation for major capital expenditure programs.
• Ensure the integration of renewable energy sources (solar, wind) into the existing grid infrastructure.
• Provide expert technical guidance and mentorship to a team of electrical engineers and project managers.
• Conduct detailed technical analyses, risk assessments, and feasibility studies for grid expansion and upgrade initiatives.
• Collaborate with regulatory bodies, stakeholders, and external consultants to ensure compliance and project success.
• Champion the adoption of new technologies and methodologies to improve grid performance and resilience.
• Develop and enforce high standards for safety, quality, and environmental performance across all engineering activities.
• Represent the company in technical forums and industry associations related to the Energy sector.

• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, with a specialization in Power Systems.
• A minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in power systems engineering, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership or management role within the Energy industry.
• Extensive knowledge of power system analysis, grid operation, protection systems, and control technologies.
• Proven experience with smart grid technologies, SCADA, and distributed generation integration.
• Strong understanding of project management principles and experience managing large-scale infrastructure projects.
• Professional Engineer (PE) registration or equivalent professional accreditation is highly desirable.
• Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to innovate and drive technological advancements in power systems.
• Familiarity with South African electrical codes and regulations.
