Safety Manager – KZN – Mining
Location:

Reports to:
Mining Manager
Overview:
The Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring the overall safety of all employees, visitors, and contractors within the mining operations in Kwa Zulu-Natal. This role requires a proactive and strategic approach to developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs and procedures to prevent workplace injuries and ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations.
Responsibilities:
– Develop, implement, and maintain safety programs that comply with all relevant health and safety regulations and best practices
– Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and risks, and implement corrective actions as needed
– Provide safety training to employees, contractors, and visitors to ensure compliance with safety procedures and regulations
– Investigate workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses to determine root causes and implement preventative measures
– Develop and maintain emergency response plans and coordinate emergency drills and exercises
– Manage and monitor the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure proper PPE is worn at all times
– Participate in safety committees, meetings, and inspections to promote a culture of safety within the organization
– Liaise with regulatory agencies, industry groups, and local communities on safety-related matters
Qualifications:
– Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, engineering, mining, or a related field
– Minimum of 5 years of experience in a safety management role within the mining industry
– Knowledge of South African health and safety regulations, including the Mine Health and Safety Act
– Professional certifications such as SAMTRAC, ISO 45001, or NEBOSH are preferred
– Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels
– Proven track record of developing and implementing safety programs that have resulted in improved safety performance
– Ability to work independently and make decisions in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
– Valid driver’s license
