The purpose of this document is to define roles, responsibilities, and authorities to facilitate effective Quality and QH&S Management.

Responsibilities

  • Be fully aware of the policies and practices of the company as specified in the Systems Maintenance Manual and Departmental Procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, legislation, customer, and client requirements.
  • Maintain adherence to Management Systems compliant with SANS ISO/IEC 17025 and OHSAS 18001:2007 standards, including maintaining SANAS and OHSAS accreditations.
  • Execute work efficiently, ethically, and timely, adhering to Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality policies. Ensure proper preparation of samples according to customer requirements and procedures. Communicate instructions clearly to staff.
  • Train and develop staff, perform witnessing of activities, and ensure documentation of training and competence assessments.
  • Address equipment malfunctions, implement corrective actions, and authorize work resumption.
  • Participate in root cause investigations and implement corrective/preventative actions.
  • Review calculations and reports, monitor ongoing jobs, and utilize resources effectively to prevent bottlenecks.
  • Manage expenditures and ensure equipment maintenance and calibration schedules are followed.
  • Ensure proper use of equipment, PPE, and tools by staff. Conduct on-the-job training as needed.
  • Inspect and monitor staff performance, ensure correct sample storage, and conduct stock takes.
  • Attend SHEQ meetings and ensure compliance with safety, health, and environmental policies.
  • Maintain good housekeeping and ensure a tidy workplace.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the line manager.
  • Qualifications

    • Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science
    • Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or equivalent

    Experience

    • Minimum of 5 years sampling and preparation experience, preferably in coal
    • Knowledge of laboratory operations aligned with ISO 17025
    • Fluent in English with good communication and interpersonal skills
    • Well organized and computer literate
