Transport Engineer

Location: Richardson, TX

Salary: $55.00–$57.00 USD per hour

Work Location: Richardson, TX (Hybrid office Tues–Thursday; long‑term contract)

Responsibilities
  • Process market‑level plans, customer capacity requirements, and internal transport requirements to create and act on individual Capacity Creation Requests (CCRs) for US domestic network transport builds across ULH and OTN Mesh networks.
  • Plan, forecast, and monitor long‑distance (LD) and ULH transport network infrastructure and equipment regularly.
  • Support LD transport capacity requirements needed for Verizon’s full suite of products and customers.
  • Conduct capacity research analysis and initiate projects based on customer requirements.
  • Coordinate with real‑estate and central office equipment teams to secure adequate power, space, and cooling for network growth.
  • Perform detailed equipment engineering for network augmentations, including developing specifications, obtaining approvals, issuing purchase orders, creating diagrams/drawings, and ensuring vendor delivery.
  • Ensure all work meets applicable engineering, financial, planning, and operational standards.
  • Develop bills of material, order network equipment, rack, and hardware, define cable requirements, and create cable‑running lists.
  • Maintain the central Network Inventory Database (e.g., ICON, Nautilus, CoFEE, CCP) for new builds, adds, and decommissions.
  • Collaborate with Verizon stakeholders and subject‑matter experts to support iEN LD/ULH Transport implementation.
  • Provide detailed diversity analysis for internal and external groups to support future orders, mesh growth, and converged core data networks.
  • Execute wavelength rearrangements to reduce stranded capacity.
  • Support multi‑year capacity forecasts and network builds, determining capital funding, business cases, and justifications.
  • Coordinate with GTNOC, lease contracts, capital planning, engineering, project management, and operations/RCAT for build plans and stakeholder buy‑in.
  • Identify and resolve issues with stakeholders to remove performance roadblocks.
  • Generate data analysis, reports, and presentations for transport planning stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate leadership, self‑motivation, and team orientation.
  • Train and mentor junior engineers.
  • Maintain flexibility with a full‑time schedule, including evenings, weekends, and on‑call duties.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and conference calls for assigned projects.
  • Commutably attend off‑site meetings when required (≈15% of time).
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related field and 5–10 years progressive experience designing SONET and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) transport systems.
  • Extensive logical knowledge of SONET and long‑distance transport systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and competent computer proficiency.
  • Adept at learning position nuances, absorbing knowledge, and teaching peers.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management abilities; self‑starter; comfortable in fast‑paced, dynamic settings.
Job Skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent verbal, written, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, adapt to shifting priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Experienced in consolidating information from multiple tools, systems, or platforms into a single database or repository.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with ICON, CCP, BGW, MECCA, NAUTLUS, CANVAS, TCOMS, or nSAP.
  • Local to the Richardson, TX area at the time of submission.
